Heavy duty Rhino-rack

Hello,
I need to remove the factory roof rails on my GXL so I can fit a set of heavy duty bars. Has anybody done this before?
How do I get the end covers off the existing rails with out damaging them?

Hopefully, the rails on the 150 is very similar to the 120

You might be the first to do this on the 150, so document every step with pics !!

BTW, how much were the heavy duty bars?

Thanks for the help with the 120 information. I can't imagine it would be too different.
I already had the bars from a previous vehicle and only had to buy the leg kit. I paid $285 which seems a lot but I suppose if you need them you pay.

Hi all

I have a set of heavy duty feet on order waiting to pick them up. Did a dry run on the weekend to see how to ge them off. You can see below the clips that hold them and where the clips are located on the roof rails. The one in the middle comes off really easy. The front and rear take a bit more force (But being really careful not to stretch the plastic). I opened it up at the end then worked a smaller screwdriver down to where the clip actually is and levered it. Place a few cloths over the paint work just in case!!

This afternoon I unbolted the factory rails and installed the Rhino feet instead. I got my rhino rack bolted to the heavey duty racks and happy with it. All came apart quite easily and bolted back up with no problems. Here is a few pics. (sorry only had my phone to take the photos with but you get the idea)

Another option is for the legs of the heavy duty bars to hook onto the roofrails this system is still in development the roof rails are different to the 120 unfortunately this is a email i got back from rhino rack the other day.


Thank you for your inquiry regarding fitting CXB Legs to the Toyota Prado 150 Series Roof Rails.

Unfortunately due to the non standard size rail on the Prado 150 Series, at the moment we don’t have available a Heavy Duty attachment available.

Rhino Rack have put into development an adapter so a Heavy Duty Crossbar can be used in conjunction with the available sportz style rail mount leg. I am unable to advise a lead time when this adapter will be available. I will email you with an update once it comes to hand.

Thankyou for the positive reply this time. It is positive that a company does listen to the consumers to try and meet their needs and requirements in the products that they produce. I do believe that by manufacturing a second sized CXB clamp for the heavy duty rails you will in fact please all the 150 series Prado owners as well as obtain new clients with vehicles that were not suited to the current CXB clamp especially as more and more vehicles are coming out with rails as standard equipment.

I will be waiting in anticipation for a release date on this new sized CXB clamp. Should you require a guinea pig to trial the new CXB clamp I would be more than happy to assist so as to be able to utilise my heavy duty bars and alloy rack sooner (somewhat selfish but anything to help out).

Rhino does make a quality product and as I have mentioned I have chosen your product over your competitors due to quality, functionality as well as the way it looks. I only recently purchased my Sunseeket awning and extension after looking at all the available options on the market and choosing the Rhino one on the design as well as quality. We also choose Rhino as our roof rack supplier on our work vehicles, so know that I am a fan of your product.

Looking forward to your update email advising on projected release date. If suitable I would be more than happy to comment on your pending production of a CXB clamp to suit the 150 series Prado on Pradopoint.com if you wish for this information to be released. I'm sure there are more than just myself that would like to use their Rhini racks on the new Prado.

Surely with the amount of new Prado's that will be purchased as well as other models that have a similar sized rail, a company like Rhino would manufacture a suitable clamp. I don't understand that you can make clamps for the sports rack to suit each different vehicles rail but only make one sized CXB type clamp to suit the heavy duty bars that I know many Prado owners have with a similar setup with the alloy basket. On the forum site Prado Point the fact about the non fitting CXB clamps has been discussed with negative comments.

The reason that I went with the Rhino brand with alloy basket was quality but also ease of being able to remove the basket with racks when not required. Therefore the scenario you offered does not suit my application.

I now have no option but to see what your opposition has to offer me.

In conclusion I believe that Rhino should reconsider the option of producing a 2nd different sized CXB clamp to suit the larger rails on the 150 series Prado. I know that Subaru Forresters have a larger height rail.

When I spoke to her she said they are putting it into development an adapter for the legs for the roof rails that was about a month after you spoke to her mabe they changed there mind one of us is being told porkies.
Also I spoke to rhino rack at the supershow and they said there had been a fue complaints/interst about the HD bar with legs for the rails for the 150.
Ill send her another email and see what the go is ill get back to you.

Hi Guys

I just returned the clamps I bought for my 150 after being told they fitted, only to find out they don't! I was also told today that they are developing an adapter for them but it will be a couple of months away. The retailer tried to sell me the sprts bars but I am not convinced they will be any different. Besides I have an investent in the heavy duty bars and alloy tray that I would like to continue to use. Bit of a pain having to wait this long. If enough of us complain they migt speed up the process.

I have the sports bars on mine and very happy with them. I got a Rhino kit with various brackets and bolts etc which allows me to mount the ARB awning as well and seems rock solid. I don't really like to put too much weight up there anyway, not when you see some of the rollover horror stories on Fraser in soft sand.

Thanks Guys, good to know the sports bars work. I'll wait a while and if they have brought the adapters out by the start of the snow season I'll go for the sports bars. Not to concerned about the weight Richo but that is a good point. Is 80Kgs the limit of the factory rails?
