Re: 150 Gxl Side step & rails

you do not want something that will bend.. part of the idea of the steps offroad should be to protect your sills from damage as well. a solid step would be much better.

i can tell you, that if you have already had to jump on them to straighten them out, then you most probably have pulled the nutserts through the aluminum brackets. a few more times and yours will look like mine anyway. also, i wouldn't want anyone standing on them with the brackets that way - chances are they will fall right off and hurt someone.

a solid step is the way to go.

i've had toyota quote $1500 a side to replace them.

the side rails will be tucked away under the guard, and not connect to the step at all, same as in the 200 series

Re: 150 Gxl Side step & rails

Interesting discussion. When I spoke with ARB, they claimed that they would not be doing 'rock sliders' (steel side steps) for the 200 LC and new Prado, because testing to get them through ADR would require destroying a number of expensive 200 LCs and Prados in the process (side impacts) to prove the deployment of the side air bags and get ADR certification.

Time will tell - if the demand is there, then the business case may stack up for them to do the testing.

      Cheers

does anyone else think it amusing that in the testing and media launch, half of the shots either include a bent side steps - or none at all on vehicles that come standard

          Yes.
It also shows a little of what these vehicles can do stock standard too.

Also it shows what can happen when you apply a whole stack of journo's to cars that they don't own and in quite extreme 4WD tracks.. I think the damage to side steps was minimal and still protected the cars.

Pull them off (quite easy) straighten them up and your ready for another day of fun.

                Hi 2paint

That is a "Tuff Truck" bar you see them all over the place west of Toowoomba. All the reps and people that do a lot of evening and night driving have them. They are not a very good looking bar but for the task they are great. One guy I met at St.George with one has kangaroo stickers on the back window of his cruiser ute, I counted 19 and that was last August, he showed me the bar, there wasn't any damage to it.

I was offered an alloy bar by a Brisbane manufacturer for materials cost if he could use my, he told me had to build the bar and then send it away to a test authority for the airbag compliance. They must have to do this with side bars as the 150's have side curtains and seat bags.

                Regards, Richo.

                  Thanks for the info Richo.

Yeah when i seen it in my rear view mirror i thought it was a 200 series cruiser. Then when i seen the side of it i said to myself it a 150 series prado so i grabbed the phone and took a photo. A tuff truck bar hey, i agree with you they are not a good looking bar, as you say and i can tell how its built the name says it all, tuff truck design to protect from roo strike & other animal impact etc.

Once again thanks for the info on the bar richo.

Does anyome know if any one has or is producing them.
I'm waiting for the Tjm bar as it looks different and has nice lines.
                    Any info would be great.

I have just purchased a Prado GX 150 and had the Toyota dealership put on steel side steps as part of the deal. They told me that they had sourced the steps from a local company in Newcastle NSW. I will make some inquiries and get back to you. I will also ask them about the sidestep/air bag issue and see what they say.
