  • Roof Mounting DVD player to New VX

    Hi There,

Has anyone attempted to fit an aftermarket roof mounted DVD player to a 5 door prado and can explain how they went about the installation process and what was involved, any pics of the process or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    John

      Hi Guys
We were looking at putting a roof mount player in but decided to go for the players that are recessed in to the back of the headrests. Couple of reasons, 1, usually you can mount the roof player through the hole of the standard interior light but on the prado it is to far back, didn't really want to cut a new hole in the roof lining, 2, you have to pull the roof linging down a bit to find where the roof ribs are to screw to and hopefuly you checked the lenght of the screws right and it wasn't to long!!!, 3, this way we have two dvd players so the kids can have two different things playing at the same time therefore keeping me sane as no arguments!!! If you would like some pics up let me know.
      Thanks

Thanks for the prompt feedback, would love to see some pics and did you do the installation yourself or get it done professionally and what brand units are they?

        Thanks

          Hi John

I just bought them and installed them myself. They are Option Audio brand. They weren't to hard to install. Bit of mucking around getting the wires down the seat but there is a void in the middle and just used a piece of coathanger wire to pull the wires through. It probably only took and hour. Pic is below. Cost $720 with two players and two wirless headphones. You can see that I got the grey but is a leather look alike vinyl but I have seen a motor trimmer about recovering them and he said about $100 to match the seats.

          Thanks, Peter

            They look pretty neat.

Where did you get them from, and do they have a built in DVD player of is it seperate?

              Hi Woody
We just got them from WOW but I know a few places like Autobarn have them as well. Yes the players are in the unit as well. The screen flips up and you put the disk in behind. This is another reason we like these as there are no wires and bits everywhere.
              Thanks
              Peter

                Hi Peter,

Thanks for the pic and explanation, l have ordered the VX with the black trim so hopefully might be able to get a set in black.

What size screen are they and for that price were the wireless headphones included in the price or was that extra?

Were did you get power from the vehicle from what source?

My Prado arrives mid July so need to make a decision on what to get as the kids will drive me bannans without the DVD player.

                Regards
                John

                  Hi John

The price was for the headphones included. Had to screw them on price a fair bit though. The screen size is 7 inch. Yes they do come in black. The covers on them will look pretty good with the black leather. I don't think there will be much difference.

                    Hey Peter

I see you have the "exclusive" beach towel seat covers, I myself have these and are very happy with the dual purpose.

Re: Roof Mounting DVD player to New VX

Thanks for the heads up here you guys. I pick up my GXL TD this coming Friday and have ordered an in roof DVD. Not too sure about that now. Didn't bother to see how far back the interior light was in relation to the second row of seats. Given this is the most sensible install point i.e. where the interior light is, I'm going to investigate further and quick. Might even change my mind about the in roof DVD and ring the dealer pronto.
I had the chance with the headrest install but knocked it back - hmm time for a re-think.
Just bloody glad I had a read of this before Friday. Another tick for PP

Not going to fit anything as the kids watch far to much TV the wife has a Kluger and they are gluded to the DVD player when they get in the car and my sons concentration is dropping off, so thought l would actually not install anything, they can do something else while in the car read or look out the window.

Picked up the car yesterday, very impressed by the vehicle thus far, need to read the book to connect the bluetooth seems like a pain to have to set up, it should be childs play to hook up as per the Kluger and the Yaris l had.

                          Regards
                          John

                            Hi John
This is one other reason I decided to go with the head rests, most of the time I have them pulled out. I pulled a bit of string through the chrome pipe on the original headrests, then tie the string to the end of the little plugs which the new monitors plug into. I then push the plug down into the seat and reinstall the orginal headrests. Easily done as they just slide in and out. When we go on a big trip pull back out, plug back in and done, sanity for a long drive.

                              Hi John

thank you for your reply and I can understand your reasoning...A g'friend of mine puts them on for her kids even on 10min trips we which think is crazy  If we do decide too it will only be used on long trips...even then hubbys not too keen?

Lissted thats a great idea if you have the headrest type.

                              Kind Regards
