  • Bluetooth and iPhone

    Hi all

I have just changed from a Nokia E75 to an iPhone, and have a few queries.

1.With the Nokia, if I answered the phone with either the phone or the steering controls it operated through the vehicle/bluetooth. With the iPhone, if I make a call with the phone it operates through the bluetooth, but if I answer with the phone (rather than steering control) the call is via the phone. The connection is very quick, and is very clear.

2.Is there an easy way to store the phone numbers from the iPhone into the bluettoth phonebook?

3.Also, I paired the ipod (AUDIO) component of the iPhone, but it seemed to remove the phone connectivity. Also, in this function, I did not have the functionality of the ipod controls through the vehicle stereo as I did with the previous ipod (ipod only). As a result, I deleted that pairing and re paired the phone componenet only.

Any ideas or advice, or is this just how it is.

    Thanks

If you answer with the phone, it should give you options (on the phone) with what device to playback through. (at least it does with mine).

2.Is there an easy way to store the phone numbers from the iPhone into the bluettoth phonebook?
Avoid the car phone book at all costs. I manually entered a number into the car phone book and then found because the iPhone won't accept dialing commands from bluetooth, it would no longer dial, and when voice dialing through the phone, the car wouldn't recognise the call. Clearing the vehicle phonebook fixed this issue.

3.Also, I paired the ipod (AUDIO) component of the iPhone, but it seemed to remove the phone connectivity. That sounds the same as my experience also. Thus I have bluetooth paired for the phone and plug he phone in with an iPod USB cable to get music off it. Controllable from the steering wheel, but nowhere near as useful as on the phone itself unless you're happy with just random music. iPod controls are disabled on the phone when plugged into the USB port on the car.

      Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

      Hi Bettsy,

I was also trying the same thing. I gave up using bluetooth for both audio and phone functions and connect phone component using bluetooth and play audio via USB cable. The benefit is it charges the phone. Remember to remove cable when locking car as this is just an invitation for someone to smash the window and look for valuables.

Gave up with the built in phone book.....to cumbersome. I just wait till I stop at lights and just quickly tap name from Iphone phonebook. For all intents and purposes it looks like I am using a touch screen GPS navigator. I then get option to dial using Iphone itself, my bluetooth headset, or the Prados bluetooth.

Was experimenting with a cheap USB stick for storing MP3's and actually now prefer this method of music storage and playback in the car. I can control playback better and can use folders to organise songs.

      Cheers

As the other dave said, if I answer from phone on mine, I can select which audio source to use, it defaults to the phone if you answer from the phone, but you can change to car if you want from the iPhone list of audio sources. If I answer using the steering wheel controls it defaults to the car. I think this is intentional and kinda makes sense, I have had it happen to me many times with other cars where you leave the engine running to either get something from inside or just stood chatting someone, the phone rings in yer pocket, you answer it and the other person can't hear you cos it is still coming through the car setup

I just use the methods described in the manual to manually enter numbers, I haven't tried transferring from the iPhone, I have some speed dials setup for the top 5 numbers I use. You can speed dial by pressing the steering wheel talk button and then one of the numbers on the front of the stereo. I also have voice dialling working ok from the stereo bluetooth, it recognises the voice dials from when I manually set them up. All other numbers I just select from the phonebook on the iPhone.

When pairing make sure you have the device type as phone+audio I think it is (the other option to just phone) this is in the phone pairing not bluetooth pairing. Then you can play music via bluetooth when you select that as the source from the stereo. Full iPhone compatibility is not supported (it states this in the manual) unfortunately, so that means you can't control skipping tracks etc. I have also tried using the USB cable but with mixed results, on my iPhone, a 3GS, it says accessory is not supported when plugged into the cable and I get all sorts of mixed results. I just use the bluetooth streaming and control from the iPod function on the iPhone itself. The downside is charging at the same time, so to get round this I just use the cig socket with an adapter. I think the USB port is specifically designed for iPods & USB sticks/players, not Phones.

          Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

I have a GX so the stereo is probably different. I use a cord like this http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage. ... _Id=377115 that goes from the Iphone to the stereo. It then allows you to operate Itunes from the handset and use its full functions. This does not stop you from using bluetooth for hands free phone calls.

The main issue I find with phone calls is that its hard to hear and you can't turn the stereo up past "14". Do you know if its possible to make it louder?

          Thanks

            Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

Davidsford is right. If you want to pair both the audio and the phone, don't worry about pairing the iphone through the BTA setup. Just enter the setup menu for the phone and pair the phone. One of the options you will be asked to confirm is 'phone' and the second option is an unusual abbreviation (beings with 'i' from memory). Select this second option. Then when you finish the install and you press the BTA/USB mode on the stereo, it should connect to the iphone and stream the audio from the ipod. The ipod will automatically pause when you get or make a call. It is a much better option for listening to the ipod, as you can navigate around your music collection a lot easier (or your passenger can as I am sure no one would drive and play around with the ipod at the same time). The navigation menu for the iphone when connected by the usb port is terrible. A simple cig lighter power adaptor is the way to go with keeping the thing charged.

              Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

Thanks to you all for your assistance - I will try the pairing of phone and audio together.

I have just ordered a "clicon" cradle, which will accept the iphone in its protective sleeve, and which will be hardwired, so no leads to plug into or hanging around. It will be placed on top right of dash for easy view and access (I had my Nokia in the same position and it works well).

              Regards

                While on the iPhone subject...

If I pause the music playing on my iPhone using the radio buttons it won't start again. It stays on pause ? Even if I cycle through USB, FM, phone etc it won't come off pause.

Also the radio finds the phone every time I get in the car but it will play the music through the iPhone speakers and not the car every time. I must switch the car off and start the car again for it to work ?

                Any others with this problem.

                  Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

I have experienced the same thing and it is annoying. One way I have found to manually overcome the problem when the BTA is stuck on pause is to change from the BTA streaming to the iphone speakers and then back to the BTA streaming. To do this, if you look on your iphone when it is in the ipod mode, you will see towards the bottom of the screen that there is a little bluetooth emblem. Tap this and it brings up an option to change from BTA to the iphone speakers. Select the iphone speakers and the ipod should start playing through the iphone itself. Then do the same thing to switch back. I know its a pain, but it's easier than stopping the car and turning it on and off.

I'm not sure what you could do to overcome the other problem.

I have done this and the bluetooth streaming works well, as does the phone. However, I have a few favorite phone numbers stored in the car phone memory which I cal through voice activation. This stops working when I pair the phone for phone+ audio. I will keep playing to see if I can sort it out.

                      Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

I have today picked up my new VX and have been able to get the iPhone working on all functions except contacts sync. The iPhone over USB is far more useful than you may think. You can get album/track info on the screen and select what you want. I find this better than Bluetooth because of phone charging and less distraction while driving. Simply press the lh radio button for menu and turn.

Now if The 2010 prado would sync contacts like my 2003 BMW does, I would be very happy.

                        Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

I have been playing with this today and have had some great success on my GXL. Now I am not sure if I just wasn't doing things right before or if it is because I am currently running iOS 4.0 on my iPhone?

I am now able to use the USB function to control the iPod functions, skipping tracks & play/pause seems to be about all you can do but the phone still works while doing this and if you unplug the USB it flips over to BTA streaming which is good. Whilst plugged into USB I can also use all other functions on the phone like GPS, mail etc which I am not sure I could do before iOS 4.0? I also see the track name, album, number etc as I press the TEXT button on the stereo to change display.

It still says this accessory is not fully supported when plugging in the USB cable, but I can dismiss this and works fine

The only pairing I have done is via the Phone pairing not BTA pairing.

                          Re: Bluetooth and iPhone

The iPhone 3.x can do that as well. - that's what I currently have. The unit has a bit more functionality than Toyota mention but the trick, for those who haven't got it working yet, is to fiddle with the tune/ sel knob until you see "USB menu" on the screen. Press button and you are in the iPhone/iPod playback menu which is also controllable from the steering wheel controls.

I am still searching for a way to sync contacts with the iPhone but the Toyota Bluetooth does not seem to engage that feature on the iPhone and the phone doesn't have a manual contact "push" ability either. Is OS4 any different?

How did you manage to get the OS4 for the iPhone? It doesn't seem to have been released to the public yet.

I can't see anyway in iOS4 that is different to send contacts, still only have the options to share a contact via Email or MMS.

As for getting hold of iOS4, if you are a developer you can get hold of it or another way is to load the latest Beta with the newly released iTunes 9.2, you can 'option' click Restore in iTunes (MAC Only) and then select the file you have downloaded from a 'source' the file is called iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw if you are looking for it somewhere
