CAR TOPPER ADVISE FOR 150

Hello All,

I was hoping for some advise on the purchase of a Car Topper for the new Diesel GXL 150. What size boat do other guys use, what type of roof rack do you use. Not looking at a boat loader as I am a relatively young bloke (or I'd like to thinkI am) and will load boat manually.

I was thinking of the Quintrex Explorer 350 at 76kg it is close to the weight limit of the Prado roof rails @ 80kg and mount it on a pair of Rhino HD racks (rated to 100kg) fitted to the roof rails of the prado . Was going to match this with a 15hp Mercury 2 stroke mounted to drawbar of my Jayco Expanda.

Any advise, thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I know nothing about transporting a boat on the roof of the Prado.

Not that i have done it myself - ever - but the setup you have sounds about perfect. i would definitely go the rhino feet to replace the rails and use 3 HD cross bars.

i would consider a boat loader though, i'm young and fit, and i'd hate to smash the boat into the truck when i dropped it. it only takes 1 time to drop it to wreck the truck and it would probably cost more to repair the damage than the boat loader in the first place.

The Rhino HD bars might be rated to 100kg but the roof rails of the Prado is rated only to 80kg, and that includes the crossbars. So if the boat weights 76kg, then you only have 4kg for the crossbars. The 2 crossbars should weigh ~5kg including the rubber insert.

I would remove the roof rails and replace with a 3-bar setup to give you back the 100kg for a bit of headroom.

Personally, I wouldn't put a boat on the roof of the Prado.
