  • TJM type 13 steel bar

Interesting to see the bullbar comparison in the latest 4wd Action mag. TJM's T13 steel bar won it and was one of the only bars that actually improves approach angle. Seems to be a common misconception that all bullbars improve the approach angle as most of them in the test (ARB bars included) actually decrease approach angle. Some of them by quite a bit.

The TJM bar also seems to look great. Anyone have one of these or seen them in the flesh?

    Cheers, Sam.

Yeah, you're not about approach angles. It comes down to the centre of the bar being much wider to accomodate a winch that causes the problems.

Re: TJM type 13 steel bar

i'm pretty certain the arb bar on mine improves the angle.

real life testing has proven this. i gave the oem bumper a massive crease and a scrap on one section of track.. driving back there with the new arb bar on i cam no-where near scraping.

I figured that was the case too Dan until I read the 4wd Action article. On the Hilux at least the approach angle was decreased with the ARB bar. Perhaps it's different on the Prado.

            Cheers, Sam.

Re: TJM type 13 steel bar

I saw bars fitted to the 150 from both ARB and TJM at the 4bie show in Brisbane. The ARB bar was miles in front in terms of fit and finish. However, the results in 4wd action are promising for TJM.

                              :?

I've looked at the article and no where does it say what the standard approach angle of the Hilux is (or whihc type 4x2 or 4x4). It's interesting to read both the 4x4 and 4x2 specs for the approach angle, ovehang for the front of the vehicle and clearance. Both have the same plastic that protudes 885mm and the 4x2 has a 21 degree approach angle while Toyota claim the 4x4 has a 30 degree approach angle. I suspect the 4x4 angle is incorrect since the front of both is the same. The gound clearance at best on 4x2 is 203mm and the 4x4 is 298. If my calculations are correct then the actual approach angle with the plastic bumper is 12.92 degrees on the 4x2 and 18.61 degress on the 4x4. If that is correct then every single bar listed in the article increases the approach angle and MOST of them are all around 27-28 degee mark or better. There is very little difference between them at all really.

I've used the following sites to calculate:
                              http://www.easycalculation.com/trigo...gle-angles.php
                              http://www.csgnetwork.com/righttricalc.html

And if my maths sucks then you would pick the Toyota Factory Bar as a base (23.6 degress) since Toyota would attempt to maintain the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle (and therefore fuel efficeny). Based on the the only bar(s) worse off are the Tuff Alloy and Steel bars.
