  • Hayman Reese LED Hitch Step

    Hi everyone,

I purchased a Hayman Reese LED Hitch Step (Great Product!) from my local Repco store in Kwinana yesterday and installed it with no issues.

However, last night when I was driving, I noticed that the LED lights on the Hitch Steps stayed on while I was in drive mode.

I read in their product catalogue that the Hitch Step is pre-configured for the LED Lights to come on when in Park and Reverse only on their 7-pin flat plugs.

I have a 12-pin flat installed on my Prado all pre-configured for caravan towing.

I have also purchased 2 other Hayman Reese LED Hitch Steps before in the past and have used them both on the same vehicle with the same 12-pin plug and they have both worked perfectly in the past, however this new Hitch Step seems to have a problem.

Could someone please advise what I can do on my end to stop the LED lights from being on constantly while in Drive Mode?

    Thank you!

it looks like it is wired to come on when in reverse and also when the park lights are on, not the shifter in P (there is no possible way via the 7 pin plug it can know)
the easy option would be to open the plug and disconnect the brown wire. but then it will only come on in reverse.

so with the previous steps, the led came on in reverse when parked but not when driving? that strange. why cant you use one of those?

Have you tried swapping the light onto another vehicle?

        Hi guys,

Thanks for your messages, and apologies for the delayed response.

I actually got in touch with Hayman Reese via email after posting this message last week, and explained to them the exact same thing. One of their Support Staff got back in touch with me and advised that he believed that he knew what the issue was...

Apparently, so I have just learnt, Hayman Reese has installed a Rocker Switch on the underside of the Hitch Step. The advertising flyer says:
        • Plug-in ready; comes pre-wired with a 7-pin flat plug to suit most applications
        • Multi-function switch configured to illuminate with vehicle reverse lights or park lights (where vehicle has been pre-wired for reverse)

but I just assumed that they were talking about the 7-pin flat plug, so I didnt even think to look for a Rocker Switch, silly me! - It blended in well thats for sure..... (Images attached)

Sure enough, once flicked in the opposite direction, it fixed the issue and stopped the LED Lights on the Hitch Step from staying on while in Drive Mode. Now, it works as it should, and comes on when reversing only.

        Thanks guys!
