I am torn between having a snorkle installed on my 2016 gxl 2.8 or installing a lithium aux battery. I need both but funds limit installing only one of the two for now. If it was up to you what would you do and why?

Up to personal interpretation there. I’ve never seen an improvement, but it’s a good sales pitch.
Nearly all dust billows up behind the wheels and under the car, it doesn’t really make it to the air intake.
If you drive too close to the car in front, snorkel or not, you’ll block up your filter.
I’ve found with a snorkel that the filter was always dirtier as leaves and bugs got in easier.

The standard air intake has a sock like filter inside the guard behind the inner guard liner which gets very dirty driving on unsealed roads, throw in some moisture from wet roads and it starts to clog up. A friend whose mechanical business is in Moree and also does tuning (dyno) advised many station Prado's & Hilux's have restricted air intakes as a result.
As such if doing a lot of dirt roads and/or driving in convoy without leaving sufficient space/time for the dust to settle then you will clog that filter.
As to the original question, depends on your usage as to what you will get the best return from initially. If doing weekend beach getaways like Teewah/Double Island then go the lithium battery first.
Conversely if the do a lot of dirt road touring go the snorkel.
