ok all,

I am getting the tinting done on the prado tomorrow. this is the same tinting as on my G6E Ford, i'm happy with the quality. It's non metallic sold by SolarTint.

i've got a choice of colour to make.. i'm after opinion's please

i can get darkest legal on all windows.

i can get darkest legal on just the two front and darker on the rear

i can get darker all round.

i'm leaning towards darker all round at the moment

legality aside - because i know the last option isn't legal.. i'm asking opinons of the colour/mix.

We got the front darkest legal and all the rest darker. I was thinking of darker all round as well but decided not to. I am now glad we didn't as quite a few times driving at night, even the legal tint is hard to see through when driving through tight areas, like through a camp area.

Hi

My one done a few weeks ago from a well established shop.
The guy told me that I could go with either 35%(darkest legal) on 2 front or 20%(illegal) with 35% rest of windows. (my kakadu has privacy tint on all around except 2 front). To match up the darkness, 20% front and 35% rear are ideal.

However, I remembered that my previous 4wd (Pajero) had 20% in front and 5% rear that made me very hard to see at night unless you have rear view camera with night vision function.
Personally, I don't suggest anything below 35% .
We are driving a BIG MONSTER TRUCK if you compare with a little hatchback or small sedan.
If you put very dark tint, there will be more chances to bump to these little cars or even person.

Hi Folks
I did a lot of research and the results were make sure the tint is non metallic, otherwise your radio reception will be effected the minute you move out of town and that is from experience. I used the maximum legal 35% 3M non metallic black tint and are very happy with the result.

Beware, I have had non legal black tint ( to match privacy windows) applied to another car and have been pulled up and fined with the tint having to be removed and replaced, all up a $1000.00 expense at the end, simply not worth it as the application was cosmetic only, not UV reduction.

Beware of this trap. Many tint companies will offer tinting thats darker than legal. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security thinking that they wont sell something thats not legal. Its not illegal for them to sell it or fit it. It is illegal for you to drive away with it. I know of a bloke who paid thousands of dollars to have a workshop pimp his Ford Explorer with big wheels, lowered suspension and mirror tint on his windows - to each their own i guess. His 64 year old mum borrowed it to do the grocery shopping and the cops pinged her with a defect notice. He got given a week to have it returned to legal, and had to cough up more money in fines. Like Richo says... not worth it.

It is LEGAL to have the rear windows and cargo area darker. It is ILLEGAL to have the drivers and passenger front windows darker than 35%.

remember, i wasn't asking what was legal or not, just experience on the tinting combinations.
