A snorkel story,
After waiting with anticipation fot the Safari snorkel to arrive for my D4D, I finally had it fitted yesterday
.
On the way home from the shop I listened happily to the intake noise and tried desperately to find any extra performance. There's a strange 'flapping' noise under acceleration, but is that normal? :?:
Today I took the car for a 100 k drive along some local dirt roads to see how it would handle some corugations etc. After about 20 mins I bagan to notice a real lag in the motor between 1500 and 2000 rpm. :? Mmmm, don't know if I like the way this snorkel has changed the way the car drives. A further 20 minutes down the track, and even flooring the car produced the worlds slowest takeoff up to about 80 klm/hr, then a real kick in the backside and surge forward.
This is crap, so I parked in a nearby carpark and popped the bonnet only to be greeted by a previously unheard ticking noise. WTF? Then I saw it - the outlet pipe from the airbox just swinging in the breeze!
Couldn't believe the workshop had been so careless; the pipe clamp was done up, but the pipe was not attached to the box properly, so a few minutes of corrugated driving was enough to shake it off. After having heart palpitations at the thought of dirt road driving without an air cleaner, I re-assembled the pipe, checked all the other clamps and set off again. Now, no more flapping noise under acceleration, and a nice clean takeoff as before. I reckon I can feel a bit more surge there, or is that just wishfull thinking?
Anyway, very happy with the fit and finish of the Safari unit, and here's the real clincher - as has been previously reported it has cured the 1500 rpm vibe in the dash
Couldn't be happier. Now I have to sort out the dual battery, then the suspension.....
Cheers
