  • 3m paint protection film

    Hi all,

Just trying to get everyones take on 3m's paint protection film. It's the stuff like clear contact that goes over the paint of the car to protect high wear areas. I'm looking at trying to stop the kids/mother in law scratching door handles etc.

    Thanks

    Troy

    Troy,

I have no referenceable experience but I hear that it wraps very well around the kids / mother in laws hands... Hope this helps.

        Re: 3m paint protection film

        Hey all,

bit of an update for you. Just before Xmas I handed across just over $1K for have the whole front end of the prado wrapped. Guys did an awesome job, you can see it but most people wouldn't notice unless you told them. The cars black so it stands out more than on a white paint job. Long storey short, the film is porus so that the paint under it fades at the same rate us uncovered areas. Being porus also means that it will absorb impurities that are left on it for too long. Bird cr@p is enmy no. 1! it will actually burn the film.

I was also told to try and remove bugs as soon as reasonably possibly. Again the guts get absorbed into the film. Some bugs are worse than others but history will prove that locusts aras bad as they get and guess where I spend Xmas, Victorian Mallee area, locusts home territory! I wased it about every 2 days but I just can't get the stains out of the film. I've been suggested 2 products that may help clean the films but haven't had time to spend trying them out. So the wagon looks like a mess at the moment even though it's been washed!

So the pros, works a treat on stopping stone chips, scatches around door handles and the edges of doors.
Cons....doesn't seem that well suited to 4x4 applications ie bugs etc with no real possibility of giving the car a good clean immediately arriving at a camp site.

paint underneath is still in as new condition so that's a positive. The installer as offered to inspect the car and said he will "replace the film if I want him to".....cost was not discussed.

        I'll see what happens.

Not sure I have the heart to bring my self to documenting/sharing how bad my pride and joy looks after spending $1K on trying to keep it in mint condition. Stay tuned, I'll get a pic this arvo and post it up.

Mate, I understand. But seeing as this type of product is marketed as a good way to protect your pride and joy, your experience (and pics) are invaluable in helping others to decide if the cost of the product might be worth it or not. You don't otherwise see too much on this product - so your input is very helpful indeed. 8)

                Re: 3m paint protection film

I often wonder how much a few minor scratches really affects the resale value.

I suspect, not that much. It's more or less expected, and the dealers I suspect factor in a couple of touch ups in the trade in price.

I've got over worrying about every little ding or scratch. I'l l get them all done at once before I sell ( if I ever do,I love my Prado )
                Cheers, Wayne
