  • Icom, GME or uniden

Hi all. After scouring through this forum and doing a bit of research on the internet, I'm no closer to being able to decide which UHF cb radio to purchase and would like some advice...

Either the: ICOM IC 400 Pro, Uniden UH400SXRM or the GME TX3440.

If any of you have one of these, or have had to make the same decision, I'd like some feedback on what made you choose the particular unit.

    Thanks in advance.

      Re: Icom, GME or uniden

I have the Uniden 400SX-RM and can't fault it. It has performed perfectly since it was installed, is easy to use, has great audio and the RM is a real good feature IMHO. I have posted pics of it here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9331

As for what to get, these days they are all much the same (quality and price). So long as you stick with the major brands you can't go wrong. Just make sure you choose the unit that has the features, functions and looks that suit what you want in a UHF set.

      The reason I went with the Uniden unit was (in this order);
      1. Functions,
      2. RM (incl RM style and LCD),
      3. Size,
      4. Unit Style.

Someone is bound to mention the future 80 channel changes to the UHF public channels and before that can of worms is opened, I wouldn't be too concerned about it in the short term. It will be some years before the 80 channel units own the market so these 40 channel units are fine. If you want to "future proof" buy something that is advertised as software upgradable so it can be programmed to the 80 channel settings when they become the "vogue".

        Hutch and Rogueaussie,

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my question and for the advice. It is greatly appreciated. I had read about the new '80 channel' service coming early next year and was a little concerned/confused, but as you say rogue, it's probably going to be a while until it becomes 'the norm' anyway.

        Once again, thanks.

        Rod.

In the end filter through all your requirements and select the best model to suit your needs.

I would spend more time on the antenna, placement etc as it will govern how well your unit performs (assuming all units are mostly the same in performance).

Take into consideration the types of terrain you will be using it within. You might need a combination of swappable antenna types

              Hi Madrod,

I've had the Uniden 400SX-RM for over two yrs now. Its performed faultlessly. I like the ease of use and clear sound. It has a bucket load of features. I think it looks better than the others too, but that's a personal opinion. I tend to use both the unit speaker and the hand set speaker simultaneously for best sound quality. I mounted the unit under the drivers side dash.

I am sure each of the units you mention are good. Go for the one that appeals most to you.

              Cheers - Greg
