[QUOTE=wooley;389869]Am I the only one here thinking who the #### really cares about pedestrian safety?
Attitudes like above will be the death of the bullbar.
Two years ago I was on Stockton beach the day after Australia Day and the night before there had been a storm, the place was a shit fight. Basically people had just up and left, leaving all there crap behind. I can imagine most of them sitting in tents on Stockton, storm ragging around them and them saying who the #### cares about the beach, I'm out of here(not say this would be your attitude).
I remember saying to the wife that day I wonder how long till they stop people camping here.
Took just under 2 years.
Pedestrian safety may not be a concern of yours (which is fine), but I'm thinking a vast majority of Australians could care even less about what frontal protect you can legally but on your car.

To be honest, a smart bar has its place - it really is a good bar from a the company that bought us the Hills Hoist. They have a great following of customers who swear by them. They also look at home on the Ford Falcons, Holden Commodores etc due to the weight saving of the bar. Forgot to add, also has a very big following for Hilux and LC70 for underground mining - plastic does not rust and Smart offer a great price on a new mount kit...
After growing up on a farm, seeing many animal strikes (and a son of a father who owns a Hilux with a butt ugly Tuff Bullbar and Side Rails fitted over the product I was pedaling) give me a Steel Bar (or a good quality solid alloy) any day of the week. There is a reason why bars are crash tested at 60km and under and its not to do with our street speeds - anything over that and usually the 'hitee' is toast and the 'hitter' could be walking home - makes the reports look better. I have seen a smart, steel and alloy bars damage at a 100km and hour and the different variables will all play part in whether or not you drive home or walk home - I am yet have someone walk into my old store and tell me that they hit a stationary 60L drum of blue water in a straight line or a pendulum...
To answer you question Jasen, who cares what anyone else thinks about the bar. Its you car, your money and your family. Any protection up front is better then nothing. Personally the smart bar is a great option, just not my cup of tea for a few reasons - in my humble opinion I believe the steel bar to be a stronger, better looking product that I can colour code. It also houses my antenna, winch and sensors - but best of all my wife gave it the big thumbs up.
By the sounds of it, we do not need to convince you that you need Smart Bar - you need to convince yourself that you need a bar. At the end of the day - its your money and car.

In regards to what is fitted to ambulances. It is what the supplier of the ambulances fit as part of the build from a van to an ambulance. So a lot of the choice is down to the contract holder picking the accessory fitted. As long as it holds the lights and antenna's most the operators would not care what is fitted to their ride.
This debate can/will go on for ever. Like asking is ford better than holden.
Ultimately Buy what ever makes you happy.

The only one exception is Rugby Union when I cheer for England if playing Australia.
I'm feeling about as popular as Johnie Wilkinson in 2003 at the moment but I can take it lol

Sorry guys easy to say you don't care, not so easy to live with yourself after. I never want to go through that.
I was only 18, and I don't think it really affected me that badly, 6 years on and I've almost forgotten about it.
Maybe it was made easier by the fact he was drunk, unlicensed, and running a red light at god knows what speed on a bike to get away from a breatho.
Would you seriously be that much more upset if you hit someone with a steel bar instead of a plastic bar?2011 150series GXL

You are definately an asshole.
How many of those would have had different outcomes dependent on car type and accessories fitted? A lot less than #### all would be the answer to that one.
Why risk your own safety in terms of animal strikes etc for the off chance that one day you might be that one in a million person who hits a pedestrian!?
I'm not an asshole,I'm stating the bloody facts.

But why should I compromise my safety when driving all the time just in case one day some other drunk moron belts through a red light or someone runs in front of my car.
In those situations there is nothing you can do and it's unlikely anything to do with your accesory choices is going to help.2011 150series GXL

Derek do those pedestrians happen to sleep on the road? That's one rumour I have heard, another is that the pedestrians lay down behind police cars in driveways.
