Hi Guys ... I have just discovered cracks on both inner guards of my 2010 / 150 which has now done 152000 ks it has been up the tip and across the aSimpson as well as the Bungles and various other dirt road destinations .... I am not to pleased with the situation so I will hopefully take it up with Toyota and TJM .... hope I get some satisfaction if not looks like I will have to take it to a panel shop to have it rectified and strengthened .... so ye s they do CRACK.

Do you have dual batteries by any chance? Do you drop tyre pressures on corrugations? It might not be the bullbar causing the issue.Originally posted by peterlc View PostComment

allways drop the tyres to about 24 on corry and about 18 on sand ... have dual batteries / both the same size as standard oe ..... cant see how that could cause problem as the oe starter battery side is cracked exactly the same as the 2nd battery side ....Originally posted by fido666 View PostComment

My mate and I bith had cracked guards with no bullbar. The cause seems to be high frequency vibration from corrugations.
We've both had the genuine Toyota patch kit fitted. Looks better than new and a lot stronger[B]Steve[/B]

We already have had our RHS crack & repaired & strengthened by Toyota, but I'm concerned about the LHS. Since the repair we have done quite a bit of rough outback kms w/o any signs of more cracks, but I've also reinforced the RHS battery tray and how it sits & now I might have to look at doing the same to the LHS battery....

the 2nd battery tray is an 4x4 off road from geelong .... a much more solid unit than the TJM .... yes the BB is a TJM unit and I do not have a winch installed .... what is this "Genuine Toyota patch kit" .... does the local Toyota dealer install it or does the local panel shop need to do the job ..... maybe it will solve my problem .

It's not the solidness of the unit, more so does it have any "extra" Cross Bracing like the TJM carrier. The TJM one has a bracket that bolts to the front radiator support panel and stops any Fwd/Rev movement of the battery and therefor any flexing (to my knowledge).Originally posted by peterlc View Post

Hi Rob, was never able to find out the part number. Both of our vehicles were stock suspension and no bullbar so the cracked guards were fixed under warranty. It does seem that Toyota are trying to keep the existence of the patch kit a secret.Originally posted by rob_macca67 View Post
The job doesn't take more than a few hours as it only involves cleaning under the guard, fitting the kit which is an exact match of the guard and then bolting it into place.
As to the other posts, the weight of the battery plays a big part in the problem but changing the design of the bracket really doesn't help. I spent a lot of time looking into this. Patch kit eliminates the structural weakness.[B]Steve[/B]

the battery tray has a bracket that bolts to the front radiator support panel and stops any Fwd/Rev movement and it also has a 10mm rubber pad under the battery ..... I cant see that the battery is a problem especially seeing that the OE LH side battery guard area crack is identical to the 2nd battery guard area ... as for the patch solution being a 100mm wide strap the same contour as the guard I would be very doubtful if bolting it on would stop the crack from spreading .... I would think a more permanent fix solution would be to get it expertly welded in as well as getting the crack welded ..... all I can say is the whole deal is most unsatisfactory and I think that when I get it all sorted the Prado will be traded in on something more robust .... possibly a ute that they are now developing for the mining industry which are designed for and come with a "Factory fitted dual battery and steel bull bar and canvas covered seats" such as is the case for the latest Ford Ranger release .... see carsguide/Ford Australia for more info.

I'm still running a 270mm long battery WITHOUT a battery tray and still don't have any cracks. Something to think about.....

Since putting a battery tray in and then modifying it with more support, & installing a smaller, lighter battery I haven't had any issues..... but I think it comes down to a number of things like where you're driving (ie corrugations, etc); tyre pressure; speed, and a few probably a few other things we don't realise either.......... or it just comes down to it was a Friday built car
