  • Prado 150 chassis weld/repair

I've had a bump from the rear and the rear right hand corner of the chassis frame is slightly creased (courtesy of the towbar).
The crash repairer tells me that Toyota won't permit repair to the chassis and have ordered a complete replacement frame $7000!
I can't find any info from Topyota on this myself except that there's actually replacement parts available - all ex Japan.
Anyone have experience with chassis repair on a 150 series??

    Thanks

It must have been a decent wack to bend the chassis ?
    Cheers

Actually no. The rear cross-beam sits just inside the plastic bumper. It the towbar gets hit it deforms the cross-beam at the point it joins the side rail of the ladder frame. Surely this kind of thing happens frequently. It's a very exposed part of the frame and very vulnerable I think...

I'm lead to believe that it is illegal to weld or drill/cut into the chassis.
I know that smash repairers have chassis straighteners, so I assume that this is OK.

If the smash repairer has advised that your chassis needs to be replaced, then I would rather have that done.

What sort of towbar do you have?

Toyota genuine tow bar. A Toyota dealer emailed me a parts diagram for chassis components. Almost all of the chassis is available as individual parts. Someone must use them... I'm surprised noone has similar experience.

Can you explain how it was hit? I have been hit hard on the freeway up the rear and no bent chassis. The Mazda ended up under the bumper into the petrol tank.

I just recently got rear ended quite hard also on the freeway and had no chassis damage.

The day before it went into the crash repairer my wife decided to finish the job by reversing into a pole which did more damage to the bumper than the car.
