  • Rust in Rear Door

    Hi All,

I have just noticed some surface rust/paint bubbling on the interior of my rear door. It is just below the bottom of the plastic trim.

Has anyone else had similar occur on their car?

Also has anyone dealt with Toyota (the car is 2y11mth since delivery) over a corrosion issue and got some advice?

I get the feeling they would try and wriggle out of anything like this but am off to see them on Wednesday.

      Hi there,

I complained to Toyota about surface rust on the chassis & suspension when the vehicle was only a few weeks old.

Extract from their reply, which took three months is below, so good luck with rust claims under warranty: -

Please accept our sincere apology for the time it has taken to investigate
      > this further.
      >
      > As you are aware your vehicle was assessed by a Toyota Technical Field
      > Manager, we would like to make you aware that surface rust on thick or
      > solid steel components will not reduce the longevity or reliability of the
      > vehicle in any way and the condition is considered normal by Toyota.
      >
      > We sincerely apologise for the disappointment caused and thank you for
      > contacting Toyota.
      >
THIS IS THE FIRST OF THREE LETTERS FROM TOYOTA CLAIMING SURFACE RUST IN NEW TOYOTAS IS CONSIDERED NORMAL BY TOYOTA.

      Tar Trek.

Rust on the chassis is considered normal. Have read it on other forums as well with other car brands. Rust on body panels on the other hand is cause for concerned and is claimable under the perforation warranty (one would hope)

          Hi amts,

Section 1-8 of the Warranty & Service Book:-

          PAINT DEFECT & SURFACE RUST.

Any surface rust or paint defects appearing under normal use will also be covered by the Warranty Period.

For information on how to protect your Toyota from corrosion, see Corrosion Prevention and Appearance care in the Owner's Manual.

          Tar Trek.

I'm pretty sure I read that chassis surface rust is acceptable in the warranty book, but I'll have a look this afternoon. At the end of the day it is going to take a looooong time to rust through the chassis. Body panel rust though is another thing altogether as it doesn't take long for that to eat a hole in your rig.

Not to take away from your troubles, but from experience with land cruisers and prados over the last 15 years, dirt or sand particles that stick the rubber seals scratch through the paint during normal driving conditions caused by door vibrations, add dirt roads and increase the dirt content and that paint is going to scratch in no time. You say that it's nearly three years old so that is a lot of wear and tear from dirt particles if the seals aren't kept clean. Paint coverage is not what it used to be in earlier vehicles. Hopefully you get a positive out come though. Good luck
