  • roof rail holes

Hi all, just purchased a second hand 150 series GX that previous owners had removed roof racks from and left the mounting holes in the roof gutters empty, meaning rain water would have gone down them! Does anyone know if that water would have drained away, or collected somewhere eventually to rust away? Thanks

  • #2
The GX never had roof rails. Are you sure the holes are open? Maybe the previous owner fitted a full length rack and only removed it just before sale. If this is the case there may be minimal damage if the holes are open. Water runs down between the body and trim to the floor around the A and B pillars. Lift the carpet and check. Toyota sell the brackets and trim that fit in the holes, expensive though, it's probably cheaper to fit Rhino rails or similar.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure these holes lead straight into the interior roof lining and would have thought if any water got in it would show as stains on the lining.

What mj said. It goes down the A and B pillars and may result in wet seatbelts.

I had a problem with my front holes were water was getting in and coming out of the height adjustment on the seat belts both sides fixed with a bit of silicon in the holes.

          Cheers

Put a rack back on or the blanking plates if you haven't already.

Ok more to it than just filling the holes with bolts. There is a tube that surrounds the bolt hole which is not sealed on the outside. You need to fit the blanking plates or roof rack mounts. I also use plenty of neutral cure silicone. I will see if I can find some pics or info. I used to have the plates but not sure if I kept them after selling the 120. Give me a few minutes. I assume you are leaving the rear holes without rails?

Not a Prado but same same...

63158D, it has a built in o ring that both fits tight around the bolt and covers the gap next to the tube. Not sure if the 120 and 150 have the same part, I couldn't find either on ToyoDIY.

                    thanks mj,
63158D, is that the part number for the blanking plates?
yep, leaving the rear holes without racks/rails
what is present around these holes is a rectangular piece of white material something like neoprene. That's not a blanking plate is it?
                    cheers

I just went out to the shed and dug out the bits left over from my 120 GX. Lucky, I wasn't sure what I had thrown out and what was left.

I am guessing the white material is just a bandaid that the previous owner or dealer put on. The parts on a 120 (EDIT: which are different parts to a 150 but look the same ish):

The bracket sits on sealing material which is now bonded to the bottom of the bracket on mine. Well bits of it are. May be like that originally I don't really know, mine just have the vestiges of some form of rubber sealing material on the bottom. Then the bolts go through a cupped washer which in turn has a cupped seal inside (I have shown the bits apart), on mine the cupped seal has seen better days and then the plastic cover clips onto the bracket and just completes the aesthetics.

This shows you how the cover clips onto the bracket. There is a metal latch which in effect holds the cover in place.

These are what you need. Happy to give you two sets of what I have but the seals should be replaced so not sure you can buy those separately, you may be better off showing these pics to a dealer and getting the parts. Also not sure if they are the same parts between a 120 and 150. I believe that it comes as a set for each row, bracket, washers, seals, bolts and cover.

If you need other pics just post here and I will see what I can do.

                      Michael

EDIT: According to toyoDIY parts are different, the 63185D suits a 120 and the 150 part number is 63185H, bolt assembly is different too 90119-08C47 for the 150, covers are the same 75596-35030.

Something is different so you will need to get the real bits from Toyota. If local is crazy expensive try looking up the parts at Amayama.

And for the 120, it is depicted here as 63185D but it translates to the same part number as for the 150 (63185-42020)

The actual part number is the same, but the callout number in the diagram is different. But I believe that they are both the same physical part.
