Cracked spare wheel carrier

Hi All,
Washing the car today after a weekend at the Manjimup 15000 and pulled the spare off to clean all the crap out from behind it. Noticed the carrier had a series of cracks around the top left stud.
Had been getting an annoying rattle when closing the rear door lately and now have the source.
I had spaced the spare wheel off the carrier with 2 suitable washers on each stud, when I had the Cooper S/T Maxxs fitted at about 70k, now at 110k, and do a 5 wheel rotate every 5k.
Can't remember when the annoying rattle started, but had put it down to the spare coming loose, so would remove all 3 nuts and retension when it got too annoying.
Just wondering if any others have experienced this as a search revealed that a lot of you have spaced the wheel off the carrier like I did.
I'll talk nicely to Toyota first and then look for a replacement carrier and better spacer option.

I've still got the base of my tyre carrier that was removed when the kaymar was fitted. Located in Kalgoorlie though.

Well, there's ya problem. Taking the easy route was bound to fail. There has been plenty of write ups on the 120 modification thread with ways on how to space out the whole bracket. I used 20mm flat bar and welded this to the area where the wheel sits against the bracket. I also used longer bolts to retain the overall bolt length. 5 and a half years and no signs of cracking.

Thanks Greenie, booked in to Toyota Friday, will see what they have to say, as noted using washers was the easy way out, so not going to push particularly hard for warranty.
If I don't have any luck with them, I will get back to you and work out a deal to grab it if you like.

When I ordered my car with BFGs, they stuck a couple of old style wheel nuts behind the rim to space it out. I picked it the very next day after delivery. That was never going to work.

I don't think it has as much to do with the spacing as it does with how much you tension the nuts.

Sorry mate, have to disagree, as I say, I rotate all 5 wheels every 5k and recently have been loosening and retensioning the spare regularly and generally use a tension wrench. I agree with bushbasher it is all about the load not being spread equally over a large enough area. If you need to space the spare out (and you will if you change tyres) make sure that you use a spacer that spreads the load evenly either between the wheel and mount or mount and door. Failing that fit a remote spare wheel carrier.

Ok, had the car into Toyota today, started badly, with the service advisor asking if I had the extended warranty, when I answered no, she told me that it probably would not be covered. When I explained that the cracks didn't just develop overnight and in any case should be designed to carry well in excess of the weight of the spare and so should at least be considered, I was told that usually Toyota doesn't cover out of warranty. Resigned myself to the inevitable.
Was pleasantly surprised when she rang me at 1400 to tell me that they had fitted a brand new carrier and would sort out the paperwork with Toyota over the next few days. Even better they also completely removed my snorkel and refitted it which will hopefully sort out the dreaded A pillar rattle. All under warranty.
Another big tick for City Toyota service from me.
So thanks Greenie, don't need your carrier now, thanks for the offer though.
Next stop will be ARB dealer for a Kaymar wheel on door spacer.

Yes; but too what tension? the wheel carrier isn't a hub and those aren't wheel studs.

The service manual says 48Nm for the carrier nuts while when fitting a tyre to the hub it's 112Nm.

Maybe you did ft/lbs?

112Nm = 83ft/lbs
