I know, the basic question remains..........."so why did you buy a 4wd ?"
This is my second 4wd and considerably larger (read that as wider) than my first. It seems that even on benign tracks I'm getting pinstriped by blackberries and the like.
Here's a solution. Have a look at all the pics. I have used 0.8 mm magnetic sheet cut to the panel shape. Looks awful in this first pic doesn't it ?
Look closer. The whole side of the car is actually sheeted. Only the rear quarter panel is still white. The guard and door sheet is painted with rattle can in the car's colour code and almost completely disappears (look closely at the above picture around the door handle).
Will it work ? I don't know. It doesn't fall off or move, I've done one mild trip with just a door panel. Coverage is not as good as I'd like but I could always make smaller sheets to fill in the gaps. The 0.8 follows contours reasonably well but not good enough to go around some of the body curves. The 0.6 sheet I'm advised is probably not magnetic enough to stay on.
Magnetic sheet cost $190 for a 15 metre roll, paint $120 and a bit of time cutting out the shapes. Cheaper than the $1800 I saw quoted for clear plastic sheeting. If your car is already white, that'd be ideal.
As suggested below by BILLOzr, it's not something you'd leave on all the time. From my limited experience playing with it, I think you'd need to do a quick wash down of the car panels with half a bucket of water and similarly wipe down the back of the magnetic sheets prior to application. It's otherwise easy to get a piece of crud between the sheet and duco. So it's something that would be part of my day-before trip preparation.
Anyway, just an idea.
