  • Having the point rated is a good start but as soon as you mount it to the chassis it is not rated. How do you know the chassis, mounting bolts etc are rated. The only option we have left is common sense. I won't let anybody snatch me out unless I personally know them and they know how to snatch properly. If not I will winch out.

    • John has clearly stated in his emails the following "... the points are only rated to the vechicles original towing capacity..."

They ARE NOT rated recovery points. End of story!
This is a legally required statement that manufactures use for there product to avoid liability for when people mistreat them and they break!

there will never be rated recovery points for legal reasons.

the point is rated for a specific mounting position, using correct hardware, and being used in the correct manner. if it is mounted differently, used on another vehicle, using different hardware etc. it is no longer rated and companies aren't willing to take that risk.

Which is why the double welded and bolted through the chassis Toyota original tie down points are not rated either.

              • wooley, I can't say - for legal reasons... ;-)

But I will say that when I went to ARB in Cairns with my 2008 GXL that has the same setup, they said why do you want third party ones, those seem quite strong enough.
Then I saw a post some time back on here where a Prado had the whole front of the chassis ripped off when being snatched using the tie down points. The points were still attached to the broken section without any damage to them. That implies that they are stronger than the chassis.

But they are not and probably will never be rated, to save the buttocks of Toyota.

                • So at the end of the day save your money and use the very strong NON-Rated Toyota points rather than buy non genuine NON-Rated points..I have used the factory points and they are very solid I am getting a bridal strap to share the load but don't see how spending $150 is and better than what it has out of the factory.

                  • i agree that the factory points probably aren't too bad, but i have seen them pulled off on a number of occasions.
none of this stopped me buying a set of outback ideas points today though... $100
they're pretty poorly made though, i'm not too impressed by them.

                      • Hi Wooley

Mine are fine but then again I don't have access to machinery to be able to manufacture some so I have to go with whats available.

                        Regards, Richo.

                        • The factory tie down points are on what looks to be a welded on piece of box section running at right angles to the chassis, welded to the chassis rail. Anythng welded has an inherant weak point, and I would think while the tie down point may be strong, the section it is bolted to would be a weak point. The outback ideas recovery point uses one bolt through this welded on section, and one through the actual chassis rail.

The factory tie down point is designed to pull down at about 45 degrees and hold the car in one spot, if it was designed for recovery it would make sense for the loop to run parallel to the ground.

I have owned 3 Toyotas with tie down points and the first thing I have done is remove the tie down points and fit purpose built recover hooks/points.

Some people are happy towing with these, and some people are happy snatching with a tow ball too but I am not.

                          • Woolley and keencdk,
Which year are you referring to.

The pre ?2007 models had a welded on point that looks quite flimsy, and I wouldn't trust them.

Those manufactured after 07 have a point drilled through the chassis, bolted and welded at both ends. I would be very surprised if they could be ripped off. The only way would be for the 15mm steel rod to break or the chassis to break. As I mentioned before there is one documented case on pradopoint - (I wish I could find it now) where the whole front of the chassis broke in a tow, but the tie down points were intact.

                            Cheers,

                            Greg

                              • Just going back a few posts on shackles.
The WLL in a shackle is for lifting and does not really apply for draging along the horozontal where there the load is not supported (such as a snatch recovery).
The new wire puller (read Turfer) has a lifting capacity of 1500kg and a pulling rating of 2500kg.
I could be wrong here but this is the information that I have been told.
Also my opinion is that if something is rated then it should be marked with the relevant AS/NZS and capacity so that anyone looking at the item can clearly see the rating and not have to go looking for certificates that may or may not match the item being inspected.
Remember these are my opinions only and could be changed at any time.
                                Regards
