I thought the main function of the sidesteps was to accumulate mud and sand samples representative of your travel. Then you can leave authentic red ochre marks on the driveway when it rains or you clean the car.

For short people like me .... without them, I wouldn't be able to get into the car! (I'm 158cm tall).

We borrowed a 120Series for a three-day 4WD Recovery Course and on Days 2 & 3 we put the vehicle through it's paces on some rough rocky stuff and some soft sand hils. The instructor was so worried that we would damage the side steps but we didn't. There was one occasion where our sand track ran out (wrong turn) and there was a sheer drop. We stopped in time and I joked that we could walk back with the side steps and hand them to the Course Instructor but tell him that the rest of the vehicle was destroyed and in a mess at the bottom of the drop.

All was good. I reckon leave them on but just drive being aware of their vulnerability.
