  • Hilux SR5 mudflaps or Gravel Rush??

Hi there, this is my first post on this forum but I have to say this forum have a wealth of information and had help me significantly in purchasing my first Prado V6 GXL a month ago.

Now to the question, as I have spoken to the dealership regarding the mud flap issues prior to delivery and they have been really helpful in promising to repair all damages (as they mentioned that Toyota is aware of this problem) due to the inadequate mudflaps (i have that in writing). They have also promised that if I wanted, they could supply and fit the Hilux SR5 mudflaps for free during the 1000km service or wait for the newly designed mudflaps which would likely be available in 4-5 months time.

Now, the dilemma is whether I have the Hilux mud flaps (understanding that it is less flexible) installed by the dealership for free or pay for the Gravel Rush Mudflaps now? Or even wait for the new mud flaps to become available and have them supply and fitted for free by the dealer?

Would appreciated any input.. Thanks guys..

    G'day PradoDude
Can you tell me which dealership you are buying from? Also how accurate is their information about Toyota fixing the problem with better designed mudflaps. I am in Mandurah and when I ordered my new Prado (due in 3 weeks) they would not come at fixing the problem. I have ordered the Hilux mudflaps with it but at my cost($300). I might be able to cancel the order for the flaps and wait until Toyota fix the problem for free (OK maybe I'm dreaming about free). Cheers.

Yes I am aware of the other thread. But if you read it through there are some people saying Toyota have told them there is no plans to address the problem and others who Toyota have told they will have a fix soon. Also some people are getting fixes for free and others (like me) have been told to pay for it themselves. I was particularly interested in PradoDudes comments because A) He is new to the forum and hasn't posted to other threads B) He has it in writing from Toyota they will fix any damage C) Toyota have told him a fix will be available in a few months and D) he is from WA the same as me so maybe I can put pressure on my dealer to do the same. Cheers.

            Hi Prado Dude,

As stated in my original thread "Mudflap Problem Solved?"

It is "The Sellers" responsibility that the goods he sells "Are Fit For The Purpose" for which they are sold or purchased.

From my experience, the Prado 150 cannot be driven on any road surface without sustaining body damage due to poorly designed mudflaps.

Easy with the bolding and text size increase mate - almost sounds like your yelling?

Would be important to note that the 'seller' can also claim that by purchasing the car in the first place you are ACCEPTING it as is, regardless of design fault or other! While the manufacturer will in most instances come good for failure of a component under warranty - the mud flap is not a component failure... Although, they do appear to be currently working on a solution for the near future.

If the seller (not the manufacturer) desides to aid you with a complaint they do so out of their own good will, in all probability, without the backing of the manufacturer. This would also come down to a case by case scenario!

For the sake of a $100 or less modification to extend the mudflups as required or a personal purchase of different mudflaps, keep in mind that once lifted - the factory mudflaps wouldn't do the job anyway!

                Hi Matt,

Sorry, not shouting, as "mature person" with eyesight not as good as it used to be, I find it easier to read large print & I post in large print.

I shall refrain from using large print in the future & ammend my post in question.

Sorry, couldn't change the print size.

Were you told by The Dealer or by Totota that there was a mudflap issue prior to parting with your cash?

                I most certainly was not.

                  Hi Tar Trek,

I know that it is the sellers responsibility and the dealer has so graciously agreed to supply and fit the mud flaps for free. My question as listed above is which should I choose, the dealers free Hilux SR5 mudflaps, the Gravel Rush mudflaps (which I have to pay $400 myself) or wait for the "New" mudflaps to come out.

All 3 have their pros and cons and I was merely asking for the opinions of the members of this forum for which I should choose.

This thread is not about who is responsible for the mudflaps (the dealership have already accepted responsibility in this case).

                    Hi Prado Dude,

I would imagine that the party who pays the bill makes the decision between Toyota & Gravel Rush mudflaps.

If the Toyota Dealer is paying the bill, he may wish to use Genuine Toyota Parts & that's probably "Fair Enough", although the Gravel Rush mudflaps look wider & may provide greater protection.

If a Toyota come to the party with a mudflap specifically designed for the Prado, I'll certainly put up my hand for a set, provided they are better than the Hi Lux ones I have at present.

I think you should choose the one you think will best suit your needs after having seen all of them. So maybe hang off until you see the new Prado mudflap. I am more inclined to go with a Toyota genuine part for the sake of not having to argue over a warranty issue later down the track.

                        Hi Amts,

You bring up a very valid point regarding The Dealer doing the job with Genuine Toyota Parts & Warranty Issues down the track.

In fact I believe that any accessory or item added to a new vehicle prior to delivery, becomes part of the vehicle & is covered by the New Car Warranty.

Actually I think all new accessories fitted by a dealer pre or post delivery only get 12 months warranty.

From Toyota Genuine Warranty - Accessories

                            Code:
All Toyota Genuine Accessories purchased and fitted to a Toyota by an authorised Toyota Dealer are warranted for the remainder of the New Vehicle Warranty or 12 months, whichever is greater. Toyota Genuine Accessories purchased from an authorised Toyota Dealer over the counter are warranted from the date of purchase for 12 months. Conditions apply. All warranties are additional to the implied warranties under the Trade Practices Act 1974.
So I would try and twist the dealer's arm and have the new Prado mudflaps warranted to the same period of the vehicle, and not 12 months from the date of the fix, or whichever is greater. This is because the mudflap issue is a design flop and the new design mudflap should have been on the car in the first place. Not sure what consumer laws would say but that is what I would be insisting if I had a 150.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Its been a great help. I would most likely have the dealership supply and fit the Hilux SR5 and I mainly use the Prado for towing on sealed and un-sealed roads rather then "Hardcore" 4WD driving (so the flexibility of the mudflaps isn't much of concern at this time). And even the dealership does not have a fixed time-frame on the availability of the new mudflaps (could be weeks or months or not even coming).

As advised, I would definitely push for the warranty issue as well from the dealership.
