  • Headlight protectors rubbing paintwork

I have noticed that the Toyota Genuine Headlight protectors seem to be rubbing away the paint on the bumper where the small plastic tabs are located.

There is obviously some movement going on causing the rubbing and creating wear marks through the paint so that I can now see the black of the bumper underneath. This is not major problem and I am probably being a bit pedantic because it is all plastic but surely Toyota would not have designed something else that is not really 'fit for the job'

I would appreciate thoughts from anyone on whether this is really anything to worry about or so small not even worth raising with Toyota as a warranty issue?

I have a pic to show what I mean (excuse the dirty car) and would be interested to know if anyone has the same issue?

    Cheers
    Dave

I have the 150 series and the bonnet protector is rubbing so I'll have to take it off and shave it a tad

Common on all types of headlight/bonnet protectors, remove them and bask in the naked glory of having no crappy plastic on the front of your Prado. Seriously when was the last time you heard of a headlight breaking considering they're polycarbonate?

Yeah good point D4D I haven't heard of headlights breaking too often, problem is if I remove them now there are four nice black marks left behind

I suppose that's why they give you the little can of touch up paint.

I just fitted mine last week.... It came with 6 3M anti-abrasive pads. I only used 2 - one behind each mounting bracket where the screw goes in. I suppose the other 4 were for the clips you speak of. I took them for spares and threw them in the bin!

          Cheers

I fitted mine recently and ........ if you read the instructions, the 3M pads are to stop the platic clips from damaging the paint work...but, it was probably the first time I'd read a set of instructions myself :-) When visiting the Toyota dealership I noticed that the lazy techs hadn't used the 3M pads on any of the headlight or bonnet protectors that they had fitted either.

Anyways, the kit comes with everything you need to prevent damage to the paint work. I was quite impressed!

Haha, I only skimmed through the pictures on the instructions when I installed mine.... I guess I wasn't paying enough attention as I only noticed the anti-abrasive pads being put under the screws. Logic clearly wasn't present as there were 4 clips exposed and 4 pads left over  ops:

It's a good thing this was brought to my attention! I'll get some tape on it asap

Hmm mine were already fitted by the dealer prior to pickup. Must have lazy Toyota techs at my dealer too as there are no pads fitted.

                    Re: Headlight protectors

I went to purchase some headlight protectors from a dealership and was served by someone i know, and he said, in all honesty, that to his knowldge that he they not sold a single headlight, and as they are made of a tough polycarbonate, he convinced me to save my money, and save the scuffing to the paintwork that often results from the headlight and bonnet protectors....lets hope I'm not the first to have a stone through a headlight.. :?

                      Re: Headlight protectors rubbing paintwork

I had headlight protectors on my commodore for 8 years. The protectors got scratched and became cloudy. When I removed them the headlights were like new which makes me think that the protectors also help to absorb UV which gives polycarbonate headlights that dull look after a few years
