Rubbing noise under brakes at slow speed on left hand down

Hi,

Not sure where to post this but will start here.

I have a grinding or rubbing noise under brakes at very slow speed on left hand down. It happens in forward or reverse. I have taken it to my mechanic and reproduced the noise but he couldn't find anything. He said he went over the entire underbody, removed the wheels and checked CV, boots, the whole box and dice. But it is still there.

It doesn't happen on right hand down.

It's almost like the tyre is rubbing on the guard but I have checked that.

Has anyone noticed anything similar or advise something to consider or look at?

I had ARB side rails put on when I first got the 150. When Toyota fitted the new bigger mud flaps they could not go all the way back as designed and I got a rubbing sound as you have described. I noticed it mostly when pulling into a car park where I was breaking and turning hard.

When parked there is enough clearance, but the force of breaking pushes the wheel back just far enough for it to rub.

So what in the wheel arch area is not standard on your car? That's where to start looking.

Hi Steve,

I have updated the wheels from 6.5" rims to 7.5" rims and got some decent off road rubber (Cooper ST Maxx 265x70/R17). I will see if my partner (geez this will be good) can reproduce the noise whilst I am outside. The way you describe it is perfect. Just weird that it doesn't happen on right hand down. I always get it pulling into my driveway.

Steves suggestion sounds spot on. You may find that as your rubber wears a bit, the rubbing will go.

I have a 120, but have slightly larger tyres like you. I had a slight rub that went away when the tyres wore a bit. If it is the same as in my case, it is probably rubbing on the thin plastic under guard material.

Hi,

Worked it out and Steve was right. It is rubbing on the mud flap on left hand side. Strange I didn't notice it before as I did check. It's a lot easier if there is mud everywhere except where it rubs .

Now I can breather a bit easier. Still weird that it doesn't happen on the right side.
