  • Removing rear rotors HELP!

I'm trying to take my rear rotors off and having trouble.

I have stripped it all down, the rotor is loose and rotates but it won't slid off, what am I missing?

Are there hand brake shoes? Are they holding it on?

The handbrake shoes are internal in the rotor.

Are there a couple of small threaded holes in the rotor? There probably is, screw a couple of bolts into them and it will come off. I presume you have removed the caliper already, if not then you should.

    Cheers Andrew

Get longer bolts or a bigger hammer

You might also need to adjust the handbrake, slacken it that is. A screwdriver through the rotor at the adjustment hole at the bottom is the way to do this.

sound like it just needs a bit of torture. screw one of the wheel nuts on slightly and just hit from the back of the disc and it should pop off, sounds like rusted in.

No, if its free like he said, it's not rusted, it won't want a hit.
Find the adjuster, back it off, then it w ill have to slide off, there's nothing else stopping it.
If you hit other than to break the rust, you might bust the clips, wreck the shoes etc

And we know how good saltwater is for everything, especially Prado rear brake shoes.
Don't park them in salt water!
Rinse with heaps of freshwater right away if you do.
This is what causes handbrake shoes to stick on, then you get the big BANG and its off.

i never back the boat in that far anyway, when i do it the trailer wheels are barely in the water.

jasen you may have taken all terrain vehicle to a new level hahaha

Some sh!t heaps you cannot de-adjust.
Then you have to smack the sh!t out of them.
New, drums, new shoes, and other bits usually.
It's just such a fun job those sh!tters.
Yes it has annoyed me to think of it.

When I back in at a ramp I don't mind getting the back tyres wet a bit, that all that is required.
If its freshwater, well time to rinse the mud off, ppl think I'm launching the Prado..... Lol....... All good fun till you float away......

Note to self, when Jasen advertises his rust bucket for sale; don't buy it

Seriously, given your description here and the rusty pics in the compressor thread I suspect you are in for plenty of issues in the future.

                          Cheers Andrew

my prado used to be a bit of a rustbucket. bought it cheaper as it was a mining vehicle. pulled the body off the chassis. then grinded away the rust and resprayed. like a bought one now.

Most of the rust around the tow bar is just superficial but the drums are a bit more serious.

The rotors are terrible, so much rust it isn't funny, bits falling off. When I put the bolts in to loosen the rotors, the steel actually started to crack and the bolts came out of the threads.

I have sold the boat now and she won't be going in again. I will still be crossing a few run outs on beaches but I'm going to be really serious about rinsing in the future.
Mate how about some photo's of the front and rear? Pictures help.
