  • Break pads replacement cost $1200

    Hi Guys,

When I gave my prado (2010 GRJ150R VX) for service today the service person called and said all of my break pads need replacement and gave a quote for $1200.

I felt it is too much. This is my first Prado and don't know its that expensive or just dealer is over charging me!!!

The Odometer says 127K Kms and most of them are driven by the previous owner.

when I do a pre-purchase inspection the report says as below:- (Odometer was 109K)

Estimate Of Brake Pads Remaining: Front Left: 70% Rear Left: 70 % Front Right: 70% Rear Right: 70%

Since I am driving 3K to 4K in 6 months they agreed to change in next service.

my doubt is 18K Kms only I have driven in 3 years and 70% of break pad is finished so soon?

May be my driving cause the damage? (Mainly short trips less than 10 kms daily- Kids pick up & drop, shopping)

Please advise do I really change it now or wait for next service. I am planning for a small drive (1000km) in christmas holidays.

    Thanks in advance

I had this problem. I took my vehicle in for the service and was told my brake pads needed to be replaced. I said no and pulled the wheels off myself only to discover the pads were still at about 7mm which is plenty of pad left. I believe they try to fleece people with a ridiculous price and a false claim of worn out pads. If you do need to change them the Toyota genuine pads are about $120 for a set of fronts, same for rears I think.

    Good luck.

Thanks cuda for your reply with your experience.

What will be the signs of worn out pads? noisy breaking or something similar?

        Hey,

Any decent mechanic will change brake pads in under 30min. $1200 for brake pad changes is the most ridiculous figure I have ever heard, and is criminal!

As cuda mentioned, genuine Toyota pads are pricey...if you're keeping the factory rotors, you can try something like qfm or even 4wd bendix pads, both are cheap on ebay, or find a local store!

You can change pads at home, it's simple and easy to do, save yourself some bucks!

            Hey,

Sorry I can't be much help with mechanics in Sydney, but I'm sure a few Sydney folks will jump on and give you some advice on where to go and not get ripped off!

Please get a second opinion. See if you can identify your pads through the wheels & check yourself.

If you walk into Repco Bendix front pads are $127
Rear $122 or something like that.!then there's your discount 30% every other weekend.

Standard labour time to fit pads is 1.0hr each end.

So $550 should be about the highest price you can find.
Add machining and/or new rotors could take it up to $1200.

If it said 70% left you probably won't need to change your brakes for a ling time.

Haven't had that problem with Toyota (yet), but my wife's citroen was in for a service and I got a call from the dealer: "You need new pads all round and new discs". Can't remember the price, but it was horrific.

I told him to leave it, we'll fix it next service. Clearly, he had to agree.

When the car came home, I jacked it up and measured the pads and disks. The pads had plenty of material left, and the disks were still well within service thickness. I photographed the pads and disks with measurements and sent a terse email to the service manager of the dealership CC to dealer principal. I explained that while I am absolutely certain they get away with this sort of crap every day, they have picked the wrong customer and they can now add me to the list of non-customers.

I wouldn't tolerate this behaviour from any service operation, dealer or otherwise. Get the pads and disks checked out. If they are within spec (and I'll bet they are), then make a strong complaint and never return to that place again.

Seems to be a common thing at stealerships. I've had it from Hyundai, Subaru and VW dealers. The latter two came up at 50k & 45k services respectively and suggested similarly ludicrous pricing for the privilege. In the case of VW, a strongly worded letter to the service manager and dealer principle resulted in the next service being done gratis. Oddly enough, the brakes were fine during that service.

It makes you wonder how many people fall for it. It's nothing short of insulting.

                        Hey,

The reality here is that an experienced mechanic will change pads front and rear in under 30min.

                        You can buy Bendix 4wd pads on ebay for a 150 series for $160;

                        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bendix-4W...ywxAXXPAZ5QDlw

Most mechanics will charge $80-100/hr labor, and yes most will charge you 1hr per axle.

Find yourself a reliable and decent mechanic who won't rip you off, and a pad change front and rear shouldn't be more than $350. Any more than that and you are getting ripped off, shop around and find yourself somebody good!

There's only one dealership in Blacktown along Sunnyholt Road ,that might be the one he's talking about.

Not brake pads but at my recent capped service (12mths), they wanted to fleece me $100 for a wheel alignment the dirty dogs.

Back onto brake pads, a mechanic I know had a Landrover Discovery 4 in there getting pads and discs changed. Parts alone were $3,500. I know its not a Prado but parts on some vehicles can be insanely expensive. A battery last week for my daughters 2002 Astra cost me $225! A mate with a current model Jeep Wrangler a while back got quote something ridiculous like $800 for a new battery by the dealers spare parts dept.
