I have been wondering about this very thing and now I know - have my 20k service coming up so will be asking for a new tailshaft. Can't stress enough how helpful this forum is. Thanks people.

Tailshaft Clunk

Well I notified my dealer today that the tail shaft clunk still exists and started again two days after the so called "re-greasing".
I told them that I knew of other Prado owners (you guys) that have the same problem, and its a well known problem with Toyota and that other dealers are replacing the tail shafts under warranty.
I said that its no point re-greasing every service because I will just complain after every service that it is not fixed.
My dealer agreed that it is a known problem, and have ordered me a tail shaft to be fitted next Friday.
Another successful outcome with many thanks to you all at Pradopoint!
Cheers,
JeffJeff

I have a March 2012 Altitude. Started clunk at about 5k (now 8.3) took it in for the service and told them about it and the rattling seats. The service guy said yep its the tail shaft and it was quite bad. He said "we had a spare new shaft" so they put it in for me no problems. The servbice manager was quite annoyed that Toyoata were still selling them with the crap shaft in them, makes them look like the bad guys i guess. I am lucky and go to the good service centre in Perth that appears to do the right thing, as also mentioned by others on this forum. Whilst a bit annoyed to have these sorts of issues in a 70k car, only 6 monthsw old is not good as long as Toyota deal with it proffesionally i am good with that. hopefully all good now.
cheers

They agreed to change it, booked in this Friday to be done.

Well I had my tail shaft replaced today under warranty and I must say it feels like a different car to drive... So smooth!!
I can't recommend enough to anyone that has this niggling issue, take it to your dealer and request the tail shaft be replaced.
You will not be disappointed.
Cheers,

This STILL going if it clunks its stuffed,,,, Toyota have a " in house letter/notice to fit new tail shafts if the owner makes a lot of noise " Go for it insist on a new one . As Jeff above says I can't recommend enough to anyone that has this niggling issue, take it to your dealer and request the tail shaft be replaced.
You will not be disappointed.
Cheers,
Jeff
