  • Low Range Ratio

    Hi all,
I own a Prado 150 Diesel Auto and I'm not overly happy with the engine breaking on steep descents so am looking into options.

Has anyone else looked into this?

Have heard about re-gearing. Is that possible for a 150 for low range only? Anyone done it? What sort of money would I be looking at?

Also heard about torque converters? Anyone been down that path?

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

Hi Mark, I ahve looked into this and researched a fair bit for the 120, 150 would be pretty much the same I reckon.

Changing the valve body and getting a manual lock up switch for the torque converter seems like the best bet from my research. Have a look at this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-lockup-switch for a bit more detail.

    Cheers Andrew

      thanks Andrew,
I'd read that link before and agree it sounds the best option.
Shame the gearing isn't a bit lower though I reckon, although it's really only highlighted on steep downhills. I don't do a lot of crazy stuff but tend not to rely on "downhill assist" as I hate the grinding!
One brother owns a Troopie and the over an 80 series and they're much lower than mine. Both manuals though which would definitely be a contributing factor. Mine's a much better overall vehicle though I feel, as it spends 90% of it's time on bitumen ferrying the family around.

      cheers,

The manual Prado would perform similar to the Troopy or the 80, it's the auto that's the issue. In every other aspect off road the auto will eat the manual breakfast.
