  • Auto Transmission - Driving Style and what effects to the life of the Auto??

I recently was able to trial the Wind Booster (thanks to Brains) and I ended up buying one..... but we went for a longer drive b4 handing it back to Paul. I had is set to the highest setting (P2) for normal driving around town and left it on this setting when we went for the longer drive. The drive took us up and over a mountain range and there was a lot of twists and turns, steep hills and decents, etc then once down the other side of the mtn range it was your normal rural highways, etc.
When driving up the mountain range & having the booster set to P2, I noticed there was a lot more gear changes being done by the transmission than there would have been if I did not have the booster installed.....

Question: Would this lead to more wear on the Auto Transmission in the long term or not??

Then I got to think how it drives w/o the booster where it feels like its lugging in too high of a gear for the speed your travelling and it takes some time b4 it decides to drop down a gear. An example of this is driving around town where the Auto seems to pop into 5th at speeds as little as 60>70kms/hr and stays there for a while even though the car feels like its straining when going up "slight inclines" & remaining in that gear for a period of time b4 it decides to drop down a gear.....To me this seems like it might do more harm in the long term as well. When I use to drive manuals, I would never leave the gearbox in 5th gear for any speeds under 80ks and certainly would not change into 5th gear until I was at least doing 80ks....

So..... with all the said, what would be better for the life of the Auto Transmission??

Leaving it change between gears at its own discretion even though it seems as though it lugging a bit "or" change it back manually...... "or" having one of these Wind Booster devices where it gives u both options depending on what setting its on?
To me I prefer not to let the transmission "lug" at all and having the booster set on P2 you don't get that..... but not knowing much about Autos..... does the more gear changes that comes with having it set on P2 harm the Auto at all??

    cheers....

(BTW: I hope what I wrote above makes sense)

Hi Rob, considering that the wind booster only changes the sensitivity of the foot pedal in relation the how quick the fly by wire reacts with your foot pressure. The more you are on off with pedal the more the electronics thinks it needs to change with the immediate throttle change. Sounds to me that gearbox will definitely be working more with it on. I think the Wind Booster would be better suited to. Manual box where you can hold the gear indefinitely. Has it affected the cruise control when you re-engage cruise after braking? Rick
Had a 2006 GXL, liked it so much bought a 2008 GXL. Liked the 150 so I bought a black 2010 GXL. Liked them even more and bought 12/2012 GXL. Must like Prado

I found that eating pickled onions washed down with a large helping of jim beam will really get the wind boosted . The missus hates me turning it on . I could blame it on the leather seats but that only covers the sound . Even the dog sticks his head out the window . Wtf . sometimes you need to hold your gear when forcing a downshift so as not to cause severe backlash in the undies .

There's various settings even within the Booster P1; P2 settings so you can adjust it to whatever but I still prefer to have it on than off. It does get me thinking on wear and tear on the valves, etc that do the changing but I reckon it's less strain on the gears, bearings as well by not allowing the lugging when driving w/o it. I don't know how Autos work but in the end it still goes through gearsets and lugging in 5th gear at low speeds in the auto can't be good for it over time either......

I haven't tried it in Cruise Control but I don't think it would have any effect as its pedal controlled and with cruise control u don't touch the accelerator pedal.....
