So, my centre diff lock stopped engaging a while back while out at a favourite fishing spot, did all the usual things to get it to engage (moved back and forth), but it was not until i got under the car and tapped the black box (very) gently with the wheel brase that it engaged. It was the sort of ramp that you worry about getting stuck in black mud, so i was glad when it did finally engage.
This tricked worked a couple of times there after but now i am out of luck. The centre diff lock wont engage now at all. When the engine is off, and the button is pushed to engage it, you can hear a quiet beep coming from the black box at the back of the transmission, but no action.
My mechanic tells me that it is vacume operated, and there is probably a small leak or something there. It is also a $2000 part to replace, plus labour AND the whole transmission needs to come out to get to it.
Given it is stuffed, i was wondering if anyone has played with these little black boxes and knows what is going on inside. I am tempted to break into it and having a poke around, working on the theory that it is stuffed, so i cant do more damage. Being the optimist, i would like to do it in a way that if it something small that i can fix, i would like to be able to put it back together.
Does anyone have any info that tells me what is going on?
Cheers
Rick
p.s. didnt even catch a bloody fish that day
