  • lag on take off

Hi guys I have a 2013 prado Kakadu auto and I have been noticing a significant lag when I need to accelerate to pull out in traffic, the engine needs to wind itself and then launches off the line a good 2-3 seconds after I apply accelerator, anyone else experiencing this?

Oh, what a relief, I thought your plane was about to fall out of the sky!

Yes, my 120 does this, same motor. A chip solves the problem as may some other after market products like the thing you place in near the accelerator pedal,(sorry I can't remember the name of it but a retail member on PP sells them).

    Regards

Yes had the same problem. Fitted a "Windbooster" which pretty much solved the problem. Have since also added 3" Stainless exhaust and Steinbauer so with all these definitely no lag at take off and using 1.5 LPH less diesel around town. Very happy with result.

Diesel? Just hold it on the brake pedal and wind the engine up to 1500/2000rpm until the gap, then take your foot off the brake pedal. Ignore the stresses and wear on your drivetrain or just accept the fact you are experiencing turbo lag?

Haha yes I know about turbo lag I just felt this was slightly excessive especially for a modern vehicle it almost feels as though the car has to drop back a gear before the car is even moving, the car idles at 900rpm is this normal?

900rpm seems a touch high, 7-800 would be the norm for diesel. Turbo lag on the Prado is normally pretty good I reckon, my in laws have a diesel Peugeot and you can watch a movie while you wait for the turbo to kick in

Its the whiplash that gets me. After the Years of the V6 I lean forward slightly to counteract the acceleration when i give it a boot full but as it doesn't come straight up with the diesel I start to relax only to be whacked in the back by the seat when the turbo kicks in.
It definitely makes you change your driving style

Ok so I took it into Toyota today and took head mechanic for a drive, the result is he acknowledged there was a decent lag there but put it down to a characteristic of the car saying some lag more noticeably then others. He was more concerned with the 15L/100km fuel economy I was getting with the diesel. I think both of these "characteristics" could be linked. They have asked me to monitor fuel economy for next service and if no improvement then more investigation is necessary. So I guess I need a chip and exhaust lol

Had mine on the techstream two days ago and it was sitting at 698 rpm at idle when warm (120 D4D).

Yes I experienced this on a test drive of a 150 kakadu diesel , drove a V6 and decided IDE rather put more fuel into my tank more regularly and once I supercharge and tow my boat I may need a fuel tanker to follow me along

there has to be something, wrong, the thing should jump of the line, in fact its should beat most cars for the initial get away and fuel economy should be no worse than 11/100km, that is lead foot driving. I get 15-18 with the van on.
Maybe your ecu needs resetting, clutching at straws here, but disconnecting the battery overnight should reset the ecu. But keep taking it back to Toyota, it does have an issue.
