  • Noise when engaging 4 x 4

    Hi,

After a beautiful trip to the Vic high country and a very good under body clean, I have noticed there is a scraping noise as U turn the switch to engage 4 low. U also hear this noise as U turn the switch to disengage 4 low. I understand with my limited knowledge of mechanical that this is some type of solenoid doing the engage/disengage. I plan to take it to the dealer, however appreciate any comments. I must also mention that everything still works, 4 x 4 and diff lock.

Would it be possible for someone else to engage the 4WD whilst you are under the car listening to the sound. Maybe there is a little damage to that area or a bit of something stuck...???
SSSHHHH be very very quiet were huntin wabbits.

Are you talking about engaging the centre diff lock or going into low range? Because that's 2 different things.

If it is LOW RANGE - mine makes a quick gear scratch noise - but only when the transfer-case oil is cold... seems somewhat common.
        - as soon as you go down the road and it all heats up, it goes away.

        (my 2 cents)

amts, when you switch to low range, does the centre diff NOT automatically lock??? In the 80, going to low range automatically locked the centre diff.

No, not on a 150, or on a 120 not those with traction control like the VX and Grande.

The noise is only on engaging 4Lo......jaco150 is correct, i tested on a couple of new 150's took them for drive and the noise is not there. tested on my 150....nose is there when cold....took it for a drive and noise all gone.
