Well on my hilux I added a remote thermostat, to the cooler, so the additional cooler is bypassed untill oil reaches operating temp of 80 deg c. Therefore both issues solved, I will be adding one of those again to the new prado when it gets delivered.

No worries, are you going to fit it yourself?

The PWR products look great and from what I have heard are of excellent quality as well.

For every few degrees over 100 the breakdown in the AT fluid becomes more rapid. If I had seen temps of 130 + I would be changing the fluid ASAP. The fact that the ATF warning light comes on at higher temps after the "fix" would seem to be detrimental to the longevity of the transmission. I would love to hear what Toyota think is the ideal operating temp. I have also read that the AT fluid needs to be over a certain temp to work efficiently so fitting an additional cooler in cold climates would not be good. I can not believe that Toyota did not test these cars under towing conditions or on rugged terrain....what were they thinking?????
Ive said it before and I'll say it again. It can't be reading pan temperature. So it is in no way an accurate indication of a/t fluid temp.

I don't understand why you think the temp measurement is not accurate because it may not be the pan temp.

I assumed the temp measurement was on leaving the transmission mainly based on the speed with which it changes and the high values. Surely if it is the max temp that damages the fluid, the temp should be measured at the hotest location. If the pan temp is used wouldn't the target temp be lower.

No, there's a young mechanic who is building up his business and comes very highly recommended, so I'm giving him the business.

This would seem to be the ideal solution Downunder but it should not be necessary...

I'll have a go, but without removing the grill I doubt that the camera will pick it up as it is not easy to see.

Just a word of warning to those with autos & tow trailers ect.

I mentioned a few of the posts on PP that I have read about the trans' oil being burnt / overheated & so I asked the man to take note of the trans oil.
He has told me that it does have a bit of a burnt odour to it, he very strongly recommends getting the system flushed out, sooner rather than later.

My overheating light has never come on while driving off road, towing or otherwise.

So there you go, weigh up your options carefully, is my advice.

                          Cheers

Can anybody with a ScanGuage and ATF cooler fitted note the temps that their fluid runs at??? Please just for a comparison. I agree with The Roo that the standard system is not good enough for Australian conditions. I think that the Prado has become a soft roader, it is no longer a tough 4X4 unless you spend a lot of dollars to get it there. Not good enough Mr Toyota!!!

Like all good base models, even the 80 series, you need to know what to change on them to bring them up to the Australian 4wding conditions or what you are going to use them for, eg. towing. This means changing the component/-s over to something better, usually in aftermarket terms. In this case it's the oil cooler and it's not a biggie. $200.00 should cover it.
                                Hope this helps, the Roo.
Exactly. No matter what vehicle you drive you'll have to alter something.

Having to fit a trans cooler is pretty common on many vehicles; especially if towing.
