  • 6 Speed torque lockup problems

I was able to obtain some data about the behavior of the 6spd gear box and how finicky the torque lockup is in the 6th gear. See attached data of behavior. Even though there is little or no change to load gearbox will not lockup the converter in 6th but apply some feathering to the throttle achieves a lockup.

i had found the same thing , i think the gearbox keeps the engine RPM higher in order to keep the DPF temps a bit higher.

keeps RPM higher as its lacking in cubic inches and cylinders whilst trying to spin too high a cog

Just had the same issue with mine, after 40,000kms. Converter wouldn't lock up and at times, driving at 120kph, wouldn't even change into 6th. Never had the issue before. See what the Toyota dealer says, but I'm no confident in them...

Torque converter behavior is annoying. Mine is not locking never in fifth gear. It locks up in sixth and fourth. You have to be very smooth on the throttle if you don't want the converter to unlock.

This gearbox is not a great one...

I don' know this gearbox so much yet but couldn't it be related to low ATF level??

It could well be, I had the ECU reprogram/recall and they found mine was low (litres!!) on fluid.

Get the levels checked and ensure the recall was done by your dealer and your issues 'may' fade away... mine have.

I've have had a similar thing since new...2016 GLX Auto

I could be driving 100-110 kph and the vehicle will sit in 5th gear and not go into 6th unless I momentarily take my foot off the accel pedal or activate cruise control.

I just took the vehicle into the dealer for it's 30,000 km service and told them about this issue. They road tested and topped up the trans fluid apparently. Then wrote, 'the vehicle holds 5th gear on slight inclines".

I drove to/from work the following day (30 km on the hwy each way at 100 kph). I purposely didn't put into cruise nor take my foot entirely off accel...was able to hold it in 5th the entire time in the hwy - both there and back. Phoned the dealer immediately...they said that they will put a call into Toyota and see of there's any guidance with this problem...that was Thursday afternoon...it's now Tuesday morning and no word yet...grrr...

                  hi Cuda,
I was thinking if there would be a firmware update for the 2016 Prado, and I found you talking about it.
so I went to some local Toyota service centers here in south Brisbane and they know nothing of the firmware update for the Prado.
could you please give me a number or were to find some Toyota placers that might know about this firmware update.
as everyone on here is saying it's a joke about the 6th gear not holding in gear longer as it would be better if it did.
thank you for any information you could help with. cheers.

The final ratios tell the story.
6-speed box in 5th gear and the 3.909 diffs is almost exactly the same as the 5-speed in 5th with 3.727 diffs.
To add another overdrive to that gutless engine is a very tall order.
Toyota worked the software so the engine doesn’t lug in 6th with converter lock.
Even the 200 series with heaps more power on tap doesn’t lock 6th until very high freeway speeds.
