Hello,
My name is Fernando and I live in Spain.
I have been round Morocco for the last week in a trip of over 3500 km most of them on the road, but there have been some on sand and dunes. My car is a Prado 2018 with as little as 4000 km on the clock (before this trip). Its a VXL one with 19 rims. I have been checking ATF temp with torque during the trip.
I have notice (as I could read in the forum) that the torque converter tends to unlock all the time. I am afraid of the temperature that ATF can reach. On the highway (120-130 km/h) temperature is slightly above 90ºC. but when you have to climb gearbox reduces to 5th gear and will never lock up the torque converter. So ATF temp in the converter starts to raise. I have seen temps over 115ºC. The solution is to reduce to 4th gear. Then the converter will lock up.
In the sand you have the same problem. Torque converter never locks up and you see ATF temperatures from 115 to 120º C. AT temp light didn't lit up at any time.
Have some questions:
Is the 90-95ºC a normal temperature in highway?
Why the torque converter never locks-up in 5th gear?
How is the better way of driving it¿? lock the 4th gear every time it reduces to 5th??
Thanks in advance!
PD. sorry if you see any mispellings in the thread.
