  • Clunk in driveline when on and off throttle around 20kmh

My 2021 VX Prado has had this very noticeable clunk from the rear (that you can feel through the seat) from new. There are no other related symptoms ie noises, leaks etc. Vehicle now has 26000 km on it and the clunk feels to be getting worse. Have asked the dealer to check this at next service in two weeks time. Anyone else experiencing this?

Earlier models had this issue and I think the first solution was to thoroughly grease the universal joints??

Unchanged the day after service so maybe not uni joints?

Might be worth lubricating the uni-joints and tail shaft, it is very rare that dealerships do this during a regular service.
there are 6 grease nipples in total, one on each uni-joint (4 x uni-joints total ) and one on each spline end of the tailshaft ( front and rear).
Do not over grease the tailshaft as it still requires room for movement during compression of the suspension.

If you think the dealerships do all of the items in the service book you are indeed one of life's optimists. See post above.

A second for greasing the driveshafts, front and rear.
My 120 developed a slow speed clunk, particularly when slowing down, at around 140k. Removed both shafts, cleaned and greased and never heard it again.

This is a fairly old thread but I had a similar symptom in my 2017/160,000km Prado recently. The first, occasional 'clunk' when pulling away from a standstill happened while towing a caravan on the Great Central Road. The GCR has a pretty harsh surface - I initially thought the tow hitch had worked loose but all was tight there. Further, single 'clunks' became more common when starting off and they felt like they were coming from the front right wheel. I checked the wheel nuts but they were all tight too.

When we got to Kalgoorlie, I was pulling away from some traffic lights in a strait line, when there was a series of clunks this time that felt like they were coming from the front right. My immediate thought was CV joints, since I've had some experience driving front-wheel-drive cars in the past. I pulled over, called the RAC and when the guy came, he thought it was more likely to be the front drive shaft since I was driving in a straight line. It was Sunday so he suggested we tow the van to a free 72-hour camp spot and then take the Prado to a mechanic the next morning (not the local Toyota dealership!).

Next day, the diagnosis was the right front CV joint (Peter 1, RAC guy 0), which was replaced for under $600 and we were on the road again by lunchtime. We've done another 1,500km towing the caran since then with no more clunks. It's probably good that the symptoms got worse in a mining town where half the vehicles are 4WDs and more than half of those are Toyotas - we could have been waiting a few days in another town.
