Does low range lock out 5th gear?

I've got a new to me 2014 GXL 150 Diesel, and in low range it does not go into 5th gear, which seems strange to me. If I put it into sport mode (?) and manually tip the gears, the dashboard can say I've selected 5th, but the gearbox doesn't follow (i.e. still in 4th). Max speed in low seems to be around 40Km/h, without revving it to redline.

Is this how they are designed?

5th is no problems in high range. BTW - I am monitoring this with a ScanGauge type device, so I get a readout of what gear it is in and whether the torque converter is locked/unlocked.

From memory of my old 2012 model, yes 5th gear is locked out when in low range. Similarly with my current 6 speed 2018 model 5th and 6th gears are locked out in low range. If you have the 2nd gear start function selected then gearbox only has 2nd, 3rd and 4th to use.

I thought that'd be the case, but I had a lingering doubt that something was wrong with the gearbox!
