  • Disabling the door chime

I quite often have the drivers door open to listen to the radio but the door chime is really starting to get under my skin. It only comes on with the car in accessory mode and the drivers door open, any other doors can be open.

Toyota service department said they can't disable it because it is an ADR requirement. Strange but the new Corolla that I drove the other day doesn't do it.The logic of this "safety feature" eludes me as it goes off if I switch the ignition on which is far more dangerous, just ask Malcolm Douglas

Anyone know how to kill it? My brother had a similar annoying problem with hi Audi and was able to source a programming unit from eBay.

under your seat are two plugs disconnect them (should be same as hilux) and it should get rid if your problem... had the same on my 08 work hilux bit of time one day and i ripped them out and yes chime free

but it might put a fault code when they do a service and they will plug them back in you might just have to keep unplugging them

I'm pretty sure one of the plugs is for the airbags, so not sure about disconnecting them.

Hello, I have got an SR5 07 model and there is a small plug on the key barrel(The plastic surround around the steering column had to be taken off but only 3 screws). I disconnected this and the silence was golden i am hoping it will be the same for the new Prado when i get it. I did this trick to every hilux i seen and everyone loved it. By disconnecting the plug under the seat stops the seat beeper but it also stopped the blinkers from flashing when unlocking the Lux. Not sure if this is the same on the Prado as i haven't yet got it. There is another trick you do for stopping the seatbelt beeper which involves pushing the trip meter in and connecting the seatbelt and then a display comes up asking wether you want beeper on or off. I will try this also.

The prado only has a start button, so the wiring may be different.

Judging by the lack of responses I'm amazed that very few people seem to annoyed by this problem.

I would love to know a solution for this one that doesn't involve unpluging cables as I often have the door open to listen to the radio with the car not running. 8) 8)

                Re: Disabling the door chime

I was looking to my dealer to fix this too and was given the same answer. I found that by removing the door open switch in the door jam with a torx bit or allen key if your gentle, you can unplug here without messing around with the airbags etc. My tip is to tie some cotton string around the connector and tape it to the body before you go and push it back in the hole and refit the switch, you may not get it back again. Yes it is unplugging something, but I keep the tool in the car and only remove it at the campsite then plug it back in again for the drive home. easy.

                  Re: Disabling the door chime

My dealer turned off every chime expect that one, which I think only comes on when I open the car with it running... I'd have to check. But my dealer was great and said he tried everything to turn it off, considering he turned off the seatbelt one I would have thought that ADR had nothing to do with it ?

                    Cheers

That's what this thread is about and it seems that no one has found a decent solution yet.

Can someone with a GX let us know if it has the chime?

Not quite a technical answer but maybe . . . Wind the window down maybe ??? :P

                            Re: Disabling the door chime

Dermie, speakers are down low and point inwards when the door is closed so opening the windows doesn't make a great difference.

I have a GX and this problem has been driving me mad every camping trip on the past 16 months. Every time I want to sit in the car with radio on (which is many times per day), I would have to shut the door. It really sucks.

And my wife has now just lost the key. I can tell you for sure, this is the last Prado I will own. $600 to replace a key!
