  • Globe types in the 150

    G'day all,

Just wanted to ask what types of globes are used for the low and high beams for the GXL model. Looking at a possible upgrade from the states and am unsure of what type of lights they are. Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Cheers.

H11 and HB3 type globes. I'm pretty happy with the output of the high beam, although the low beam needs an upgrade. Couldn't be bothered with the HID upgrade so I went searching for some PIAA upgrade bulbs. Not too concerned here where I live with the cops pulling you over to check out headlights, although it would be nice to have brighter low beams. I know PIAA do an upgrade for the HB3 and the globes have an 8000K colour output temp so I might try them. They also do an impressive low beam upgrade globe too. I've had them fitted to my surf since I've had owned it, which is 7 years now and they did 3 years in my previous vehicle, so I'm pretty happy with the longevity of the globes and the improvement they made to night driving on the old Surf. Prices vary so it's a good idea to look around for the cheapest. Also made up some new mudflaps for the Prado today which seem to do the job until the local dealer gets the upgraded flap in, just grabbed a sheet of 6mm insertion rubber from the belt splicers at work and cut it down. If it does the job for a while then I'll be happy.

            Cheers,

            Chris.

HIDs work really well in the 150 high beam, much better than halogen and not far short of dedicated driving lights.

As for 8000k bulbs, they are not used by OEM because they reduce visibility at night.

Anything above 4500k starts having a blue tinge. Have a read of this before installing blue bulbs in your headlights http://wordpress.mrreid.org/2010/12/...t-seeing-blue/

When I had my bar fitted at TJM in Sydney, I asked the installers to upgrade the low beam globes, and they told me they fitted Philips H11 globes. Gives me a longer beam and more light output. You mentioned H11's. Are they in the low or high beam lights on yours?

                        Bumping a very old thread!

Lost one headlight on way back from a long trip. I read that both sides need to be replaced together. Don't do too many off-road trips, so is there much benefit in changing from standard?

if yes then what is a good option to go for.The originals lasted just shy of 4 years. Osram are supposed to be the OEM, so is it just a case of replace like for like?

                        Thanks in advance.

D4D. How long will it last?
