  • Towing Brake Fuse

    I've just had the Toyota towbar fitted and as part of the install there are two fuses in the main fusebox under the bonnet. There is one marked towing which is 30A and I believe runs the trailer lights. The other is marked Towing Brake and is 30A.
    i need to fit the brake controller now for the camper trailer.
    I have seen that most people use a 20A breaker powered directly from the main battery for the brake controller but I have a suspicion that this 30A fuse will feed a connector under the dash. It would be easier to tap into this than run a seceparate wire. Does anyone have any info on the purpose of this fuse or can PM me a wiring diagram for a 2011 150 D4D GXL

    If anyone does have a wiring diagram for a 2011 D4D I to would love a copy - please
    Blue Storm 150 D4D GXL, Toyota Tow Bar, Cheepo floor mats, Tough Dog Springs & Shocks, Colour Coded TJM T13 steel bar, KingOne winch with rope, GME 3440 80 channel uhf. Not allowed to make hole for snorkel - yet..

      I have just fitted a redarc brake controller on my 150 GXL D4D, and discovered this fuse and thought there might already be some pre wiring installed with the tow bar so I asked at the toyota dealer where I got the tow bar fitted and this was their reply.

      The fuse marked "Towing Brake" was added to supply the trailer indicators, as there were issues with blown fuses in the early installs.

      This fuse has nothing to do with trailer brakes or towing brakes, which means you will need to supply all your own wiring. The purple wire on the brake pedal is the wire you need for a brake controller http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-and-locations

        Best practice is for a "self reseting" type circuit breaker.

        I have had to lots of paper work when a dealer didn't follow thespec and fitted a fuse. There was a roll over and DG incident luck no one hurt - do it right!

          I agree Croozr that the auto reset breakers are the best for the job and the redarc controller came with a 30 amp rated breaker.

          You don’t want to be in a situation where you have no brakes on the trailer because you don’t have a spare fuse/s with you. If you have a short then you obviously need to fix it first, and the self-reset breaker will still be functional once the fault is fixed.

          Incorrect fitting of electric trailer brakes can be dangerous and unless you are confident you know what you are doing, then either get an auto elec to do the job or at least check over your work prior to connecting the trailer.

            Is this the same for the SX version....I was also wondering where to "plug" in to get power in the car for the brake controller so I didn't have to run a "live" wire..

              The purple wire on the brake pedal is only used to control the relay for the brake controller and is a very small wire about 1mm in diameter including the insulation. I CAREFULLY removed a small amount of insulation and soldered a small wire to run to the brake controller connected to the "Brake Pedal" or "Brake Light" wire.

              The way I tested was to use a multimeter and a paper clip in the back of the plug to confirm when you press the pedal, you get 12V on the paperclip. There are about 10 wires so should take too long to work out which one.

              You will need to run a separate wire from the battery for the 12V +ve input to the controller as it needs up to 20A plus with an auto reset breaker or fuse, and mine is rated at 30A. Use 5mm or thicker for the wire to handle the current. You then need to get a wire from the controller to the back of the vehicle to power the brakes.

                Can confirm Toyota installed towbar guys terminated the blue wire in the jack well. There is a lot of cable excess so you may have to pull a bit of it out from where it is tucked before you hit it.
                There is a red and black wire that terminates to a white clip of some sort? This has been electrical taped to the 7 pin wiring harness.

                One think is to check the rubber grommet which the wire loom passed through to get into the jack well. Ours was not fitted back to the metal hole it plugs into and the wiring was just sitting on the metal edge of the hole.
