  • The quest to add factory heated mirrors to GXL

Im on a quest to add the Heated Mirrors to the GXL as i seem to have so much problem with them fogging up in Winter with the cold weather. I know that the Kakadu has them, and i think the VX might as well, however the GXL misses out on these luxury items.

Ive been doing some research, and as you can see from the wiring diagram below, it appears all the wiring exists to the mirrors, with possibly a few wires needed from the mirror loom in the door, into the mirror housing.

    Heated Mirror RHD Wiring Diagram

I have spoken to Toyota Parts a number of times, and from what they can gather, the actual glass in ALL 150's is identical, which means the heater panel must be in all mirrors. Additionally (I dont have a photo handy, but will get one soon) the Glass mirror panel has two large copper prongs coming off the back of the mirror and go into the back of the mirror housing. Im assuming this must be the power connections for the heater assembly, however i cannot prove this right or wrong at this stage.

I have tried doing a continuity test across these prongs, with no success. My next step will be to connect the prongs to a 12v battery and see if anything happens.

If anyone around Sydney (Esp Northern Beaches area) has a 150 with Heated mirrors and wants to help but letting me have a look at how its setup, i would appreciate the time, and will happily share a beer or 3 whilst looking.

If anyone else has any ideas, im all ears!

Are you sure it doesn't have some form of heating?

I've never cared to much but I'm sure that when you turn on the front window defrost the mirrors defrost faster than they usually would?

Not on the GXL they don't. the rear defroster button on the centre console has a logo for the mirrors and back window in higher models, not on.GXL(L)

Awesome, good work. I would be interested in this, my Jackaroo had heated mirrors and it was very handy, especially for Gippsland`s cold and wet days.

I'm currently out of luck with this one.until I can see how it's setup in a higher end model, I'm out of luck. Researching part numbers has turned into a dead end, as from a parts view i cant find any difference between the glass pieces where the heating element would exist.

If anyone has access to a Kakadu or other model with heated mirrors and wishes to help, let me know. Until i can get access to a car with heated mirrors, im unable to progress any further.

I've looked up the wiring diagram for the mirrors. They are a bit cryptic, but as I understand it, for a 150 GXL, there is a connector in the door going to the mirror which has 11 wire slots. The White and Black wire in connector slot 2 is the earth wire and the Black wire in slot 8 is the power supply for the heaters. The connector slot layout is:

                    |06|05|04| |03|02|01|
                    |11|10| |09|08|07|

                    Hope that diagram helps.

There is also a fuse for the mirror heaters. It is a 15 amp fuse between the 30A DEF fuse and the 30A Fold seat RH fuse. It is the third fuse in a row in my diagram. There is also a mirror heat relay, but my diagram does not locate it. I haven't gone hunting yet on my car but will do so soon, as I am interested in your project also. Let's know how you are getting along.

If you want a look at my Kakadu you are welcome.
Only downside is that you will have to come on out to sunny Windsor NSW!!

Not quite the topic on a 40 degree day, but i had to replace the glass of my LH GXL mirror after I knocked it today. I noticed the heating element and connection terminals in the replacement glass. Cost was $75. Should not be too hard to wire up to a switch or rear heater. Just need the RH side now.....

I actually managed to get this to work, however it was a slight challenge as a lot of the wires are missing. Ill try dig up the information and part numbers and post instructions here for it.

Ryzz, if you have an opportunity to share this information that would be great. I am keen to wire this up now that Melbourne is pretty cold and the mirrors frequently fog up. Cheers, Fred

Ryzz, were the heat elements in the standard GXL mirrors?.
