air flow meter & fuel consumption issues

I own 2010 gxl 3 litre turbo prado. I am having trouble with fuel consumption. My mechanic says he is convinced it is the air flow meter which should be replaced under warranty. Toyota tell me they havent had any complaints with air flow meters. Has any one out there experienced a similar problem and what was the solution?

Might be worth cleaning it first, before you spend $$$$$ on a new one.
