  • 150 dual batteries with optima d27f 66ah

Hey there everyone. Thought you may be interested in the dual battery install I recently did in my brother in laws 150 prado.

He wanted a larger capacity than is normally fitted in the 150, mainly to run his massive engle fridge for longer without deeply discharging the battery. So after a few measurements we ordered an optima d27f with a usable capacity of 66ah.

Now this battery is a big bugger at about 305mm long so a little bit of thinking was required to make it fit.

This is the bracket I knocked up.

The batter sits on its end and the bracket supports the entire end of the battery to spread the load. The tray is bolted to a heap of factory nuts serts it the guard.

Now in the pics the battery looks like it sits up a mile, but it fits perfectly and just (and I mean just) touches on the foam bonnet liner.

Hope the post turns out ok I'm doing it at work on my iphone.

    Any questions just ask

I thought you would've got that size battery sitting it's normal way up in the 150 making it easier to retain and access the terminals? I'm aware that these batteries can be installed in this orientation, but not sure how they would last in a 4wd. I don't think I would be keen on doing rough tracks with a battery mounted this way. Hope I'm wrong... How much surface area of the battery is actually supported? Just one edge of the cell cylinder of the D27f? Or is it shaped to support more?

If you were to put the battery the normal way there would be a fair bit of manipulating of the aircon pipe required. The entire end surface is supported the way I've made the battery, it's solid as a rock. And the optima batteries are designed to go in any orientation. The dual battery kit from piranha for the current jeep wrangler actually uses 2 optimas on there side to fit the space.
      So should be all good

      Thanks for your comments.

      Thanks. Shane

I've got a D27F mounted normally in that space , it required minimal movement of the aircon pipe

I have a Optima D27M sitting right way up in that position. Plenty of room. Its sitting on a TJM tray. A/C pipe moved the normal amount.
