  • Driving Light Options for Altitude with ARB Bar

I'm currently starting the process of scoping out the modifications to be done to my 2013 Altitude for outback touring and was quite shocked  at the prices being discussed for driving lights!

What options have you taken with lights and if you don't mind me asking, what did they cost you?

    Thanks!
    Jon

    Hi Jon
I have a 150 series with a TJM bar and have fitted a 32 inch, 180 watt lightbar to it. I went with a vision x brand and couldn't be happier. I had lightforce 170 strikers on my 120 series and it's like chalk and cheese. I paid 800 for the lightbar.

I just had a pair of Lightforce GENESIS 50W HID driving lights fitted to my TJM bar a couple of weeks ago. They cost $1010 for the pair + $59.00 for the wiring harness. So far I am reasonably happy with them but will be putting a set of the light blue lens covers on them to try to cut the extreme glare off the street signs. I do love HIDs as when I changed over to a HID spotlight for shooting the halogen quickly got retired. The difference is immense.
I intend to put a LED lightbar up on the rook rack so that is why I went with HIDs on the bull bar for the long throw light and leave the shorter range throw to the LED bar.

Coincendently the guy I bought the Prado from took it to Cape York but never had any driving lights on it, he said he never drove at night. So your decision will also need to keep in mind how much night driving you plan on doing on your touring, as you may be able to get away with cheaper options if you'll only ever use them once in a blue moon.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I'm kind of out of touch with prices. The place I was in quoted me $1700+ for a pair of LED driving lights - 30 LEDs in each one. To be honest I don't intend much remote driving at night - I intend to be stopped for the night before sundown where possible. However, I'm realistic enough to know that that won't always be possible. When I lived in the Middle East, I would only drive in the dunes at night when absolutely necessary.

        Please, keep the responses coming.

Are you wanting HID/LED specifically? If not, what about a pair of FYRLYT's or Cibie Super Oscars? I have had no experience personally with the FYRLYT's, but at 150w each, that should be some serious lighting. The Cibie's i have used, and they were awesome, heaps of light. Walked all over the Lightforce lights I had. Cibie's can be had for under $500 and the FYRLYT's for around $550.

In all honesty, I wasted $$ on driving lights.
They look great on the ARB bar, and worked well in the few times I've really needed them in the last 5 and a half years.
            Same with the fogs.
Ask yourself how much will you really need and use them, vs want them for the looks.
Come resale time, they are close to valueless.
That's my opinion.... Others may disagree.
