Thanks snaps... Just pointing out that I have actually tested the circuit on my vehicle and run back through the fuses to ensure that it's the cause.
If there is no simple way to activalte the existing plug it wouldn't be too hard to run a piggyback off the door courtesy lights down to the step and to a led strip. I guess it depends on how bad you want foot lights under there.
I found in the manual there is a custom setting that needs to be set by the dealer or someone that has a techstream may be able to do it for you.
Look in the customization > Exterior Lights section of the manual.
My step needed replacement too so I had a chat to the parts department and inspected the underside of a new Kakadu.
There are several components required including the reflector (silver box shape), wiring (runs in the tread) and bulb. The reflector box needs to be riveted on requiring the removal of the step. The holes are predrilled on my GXL 2014. If you look from the side of the step there is a slit that allows light through to the top of the tread while the bulk of the light is reflected to the ground. Behind that slit is obviously where you'll find the holes (on top). I priced it out and it was about $150 a side for the parts. If you ask nicely they can email you the exploded drawing with all the part numbers on it. I haven't followed through with it so can't answer the activation issues.
