  • 2013 150 GXL Accessories turn off after 20 Minutes

Anybody got any ideas how to override the 20 minute timer for the accessories in the GXL 150. I want to listen to the footy or news while camping but it turns off the accesories every 20 minutes to stop the battery going flat. Its good idea but an override switch on the radio would be even better.

    Thanks

I think the easiest way would be to rewire the accessory wire to constant power.

Just make sure you always turn the radio off if you are not listening to it.

The easiest way is to take a battery powered radio camping with you.....

If your battery goes flat using the radio it probably needs replacing. That's unless you're supplying music to the neighbourhood

I did this to get around the problem after the first trip. But the radio reception is not as good as the car radio. Maybe a better portable AM radio? I might try a digital radio but I'm not sure if they work in the outback where you only get an AM signal (no FM signal) as the nearest AM station is at least 300kms.

I thought there may be an easy override other than a rewire. I had ths problem in my old Jackaroo but it was easliy over come by just pushig the radio power button with the acessories off. Found this by accident when I was cleaning the car.

            Hi Cuvier100,

Digital radio has much the same coverage as FM. Uses a higher frequency than FM. Coverage at present pretty much limited to capital cities. AM was the better for outback but most have changed to FM with very limited coverage. A few kilometres out of town and it's gone.

There are shortwave services, Radio Australia still has a few but a pain trying to find them and follow the frequent frequency changes. Northern Territory has a few ABC sites on shortwave. The Alice Springs local ABC on 4835 has pretty good coverage. Also sites at Tennant Creek and Katherine on different frequencies.

Yeah, I hear you on reception. One of my mates got the shits one night, went to the back of his cruiser and pulled a roll of wire out of one of his draws. Without saying anything then proceeded to climb as high as he could up a big tree, tie the cable off to a branch and drop the roll to the ground. He then cut the wire, stripped a bit and wrapped it around the antenna, instant reception..... Still joke about him having everything in his car

Thanks. Will look around for a portable sentistive AM radio if they still sell such a thing. I dont want to go short wave as I need to pick up the local regional stations.

Thankfully we only have one drive in left in WA and that is closing soon. Those were the days.

I just bought a multiband radio off ebay for this exact reason. It came with an external long wire antenna and will run of the AC adaptor or batteries. Seems like a pretty good unit, was around the $100 dollar mark though.

Here is the link, can't recommend it one way or the other yet as I haven't really put it through it paces.

Thanks. Its got the mv and db signal specs which I will compare the car radio.

Please let us know how it goes.

The smart key will cut the power after a while. No easy bypass, just hacks and rewiring. If you run a second battery, you could wire power from that instead of the starter, saves your starter going flat.
