I've searched the forums for this but haven't found any postings so if it's been covered before I apologise in advance.
I recently picked up my first every camper from Goldstream this week, who by the way briefed my wife and I very thoroughly on all the aspects of our purchase. Thanks Craig, excellent work.
In this briefing he said that the fridge draws its DC power from the trailer plug connection. I queried this as my experience of the standard wiring for 7 pin is that there is no 'power' provided as does the 12 pin for the purpose of running a van fridge. When I got home with our new toy, well as you do you pull it apart to see how things are hooked up. Metering from the back of the fridge and sure enough, it goes to pin 2 on the van's plug. My Pardo (2010 GXL) uses this pin for the reversing lights as per the standard.
So, unless I was going to drive in reverse for a long time, and beefed up the reversing circuit wiring and fuse, this was probably not going to work for me. The Goldstream documentation shows pin 2 on the 7 pin as 12volts available to power the fridge.
I've now wired my pin 2 of the vehicle socket to a suitable 12 volt source. As there is no indication on the fridge for any of the power sources except the thermocouple meter for the gas, you can't tell if the power is actually on to the fridge's heating elements except waiting to see if it cools.
This might be old news to most, but even a seasoned caravaner friend of mine has gone to check his vehicle's socket to see what's on pin 2.
