  • Extra USB ports for charging only

Hi All, I am looking into fitting a couple of extra USB ports for charging and powering all of the devices that seem to require it these days. The cig lighter is also not in the most convenient location. I was thinking of dual ports in the centre console in front of gear lever where there already exists a few blanking plates (for unused switches etc that my GXL does not have).

Anyone done anything similar ? Any suggestions on where to get the parts ? Any tips appreciated.

    Thanks Matt

TJM have dual sets of BAINTECH SURF MOUNT DOUBLE CIG SOCK and one he showed me had a dedicated power socket on one side and 2xUSB points on the other... pretty good I thought and not expensive!

Thanks Larry, there are some Baintech options I will look into.

Further to this thread, any tips on how to remove the blanking plate shown on the right in this figure http://postimg.org/image/dcm8t7lkt/ ?

I want to avoid damaging it so I am reluctant to start prying away if there is a trick to it.

      Thanks Matt

I am doing same although mine is a 150 with different blanks. Have bought a dual NARVA cig/USB x 2 for side mounting on ebay. Need to take care with USB side of purchase and its power rating. Bought a 2.5W unit which is shared across both USBs which I believe means it will power my Ipad OK. My centre console unit will not charge the Ipad when running it connected to the "entertainment" system as it does so trip from Canberra to Melbourne with Tom Tom App and music did not cut the mustard. I want to really use Ipad with my Hema maps for navigation so don't want it going flat on me.

Personally after fitting a few Baintech items recently including their USB sockets, I'd stick with Narva. Baintech quality seems to have dropped right off.

I have also been recommended to go down the Narva path. Also Baintech is only 1A per outlet so not enough for iPad. I will be looking for the Narva unit with heavier current.

Be aware the Baintech USB unit won't power up when you start your car if there is a device plugged in.

That seems a bit of a pain, I've got a couple of Narva ones and they don't do that. Only thing with the Narva ones is they have a blue LED in them that is on whenever there is power, as I have mine wired to the dual battery with power all the time the LED stays on, only draws about 20mA though so no big deal. Best place to get the Narva is on Ebay, far cheaper than buying in the shops.
