You need to get upside down in the driver's side footwell and very uncomfortable !
Definitely solder, you don't want a dodgy connection anywhere, especially in your braking system.
From memory I did disconnect the plug behind the brake cable but that gives you hardly any extra slack. It really is a pain in the arse job, but if you do it properly (solder) you'll only need to do it once.

Thanks for the replies (Limo Guy and maulbeagle) guys. I agree that soldering is the way to go, will just have to find someone more flexible than me who is handy with a soldering iron.

        Hi all,

Fitted a Towpro today. Thought I'd post some info thats probably already been covered. I ran 4mm cable from the rear LH panel, one connected to the blue trailer wire that is already part of the Toyota harness and the other to the brake light (red with black stripe on my harness). 30 amp fuse from the main battery through the grommet on the passenger side and into the centre console area. We've got an aftermarket Alpine headhunt on ours so the multifunction display is under the aircon controls. They are only thin so there was plenty of room behind for the actual unit. Fitted the dial to a spare next to the 4WD selector. When you first turn it on auto mode it flashes green and blue until you drive it around for a while - once it's learned its orientation it changes to blue only until you brake (with a van connected). Works a treat.

            Looks neat!

I'm not sure where it states it but I think you need to use an auto resetting circuit breaker instead of a fuse. The idea being that if there is a temporary fault you don't want to blow the fuse and then have no trailer brakes.

I'm part way through installing a tow pro elite on my new 2.8L prado, found the blue wire in the back, what am I looking for the brake light, I want to connect it at the rear brake light, not the pedal?

I picked up brake signal from the rear light also.
The brake light wire is red but you should be able to trace it back from the trailer plug.
I put a pin through the red wire and checked for power when brake applied, if wrong wire the pin hole is not a problem.
Being an electrician by trade its an old trick doing this.

Thanks Terry, I know that old trick, will start pricking the trailer plug assembly, should have thought of that myself!

Got the tow pro fitted to my new prado last week. Done a 500km trip with camper last weekend and great. Going camping ⛺ this weekend as well. I love the tow pro it a great little unit that don't take up heaps of space.

I have an older Hayman Reece brake actuator which is working just fine in the 120. I am about to remove it and put into the new 150. Are these new ones above so great that the older style needs chucking? I plan to mount it in that cavity with a cover above the 4wd switch- out of sight and away from the air bag. I will just have the flap open when the trailer is on. The wiring set up of all of them appears to be the same.

404 I wouldn't fit anything other than a tow pro, I rate it that highly.

In my opinion yes it is worth chucking the old unit and getting the towpro.

Here is a photo of mine, it is a lot nearer then the Tekonsha P3 I had in my previous cruiser, and very easy to calibrate and use.

It is a little fiddly cutting out the back of the switch blank to fit it but it makes it look very neat and factory looking.

I'm planning to install my new Tow Pro Elite in the next few weeks. I'd like to do it myself (hoping my old electrical skills are still in the blood somewhere). However I don't have a wiring diagram for the Prado. I wonder if anyone has such a diagram around.

Furthermore, have people used a 30amp fuse in the fuse box? Is there a spare one there? I haven't added any other electrical systems into my 2015 GXL yet.

                              Thanks in advance

You should run a dedicated 12v from the battery which a seperate 30A fuse inline. Run brake wire down channel in floor at door edge and connect to the wire not connected (purple i think) at the trailer plug loom hidden inside the left hand access panel above the bottle jack.

                                Thanks
