  • Low Beam Upgrade to HID on 150 series GXL

Has anyone upgrade there low beam to HID? This is an unusual light and I have been told by an auto electrician that it is not advisable as he said it made it less intense. Opinions please.

Please don't do it, every time I get dazzled by someone with with HID low beams, usually a 4wd, I get an overwhelming urge to stop them and smash there headlights! My understanding is that its not legal, and for good reason.

    Cheers Andrew

I totally agree! Hate hids with a passion. Too dazzling for oncoming traffic to be used as low beam. Makes me want to flash them with my spotties. Even those idiots that run around with their fog lights on get a flash from me!

And don't do those 6500k or more lamp colours. I also want to smash them as well..

I don't mind the vehicles that come standard with HIDs because they have auto leveling headlights. It is the illegal upgrades that I hate because they usually point too high and blind everyone.
Even worse than them are the few special people that I have seen with HID fog light upgrades on their commodore.

Woody, I know what you are saying.
When I bought the 150 VX it came with HIDs as standard. We drove the car out of the dealers at night and I was amazed at how much better the headlights were on the VX. It made the old lamps look like kerosene lanterns.
The 120 had big shadows caused by the factory alloy bar which cut down the light output considerably. If we were driving late at night and there were very few other vehicles about I would switch on the foggies for some extra light.
They say that the headlights are designed around the halogen lamp to give the best reflectance and focus and in the end light output and coverage. A HID retrofit does not usually fit in exactly the same position so you get light going where it should not. This is why they are illegal in vehicles that don't have them standard (from what I have read). There can also be a lot of UV light produced by HIDs and it can discolor the plastic headlight lens making them opaque meaning that the whole headlight ages prematurely.
Have a look around for some brighter halogen lamps, I never tried them but from what some of my mates say they are well worth the $$. Powerbulbs is a good place to start.

You could try something like these.

I'm running fatboys in my 120 series which are 80w low beam and haven't had any issues. Light output is definitely better. Brighter and a nice straight cutoff on the road that's easy to see. I've tried the 100+ standard globes in various cars and I don't think there worth the money. Definitely not a fan of hids in reflector lights. Just wish the prados had metal reflectors and glass lenses. I had 100/120w globes in my old bronco and it was great. Perhaps not so great for the cars I was following lol lol.

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

What mumstruk said. I used Philips Extreme 80+ and I get a better light output. There are others that are similar.
There are also posts saying that these higher output halogens have shorter life. From my experience, mine has lasted well over 3 years now.

I use Osram Night Breaker Plus bulbs and they are fantastic. I parked in the local underground carpark next to another 150 both with our headlights on and the difference was phenominal.

Hi, guys .Well your gonna hate me as I have up graded my low beam with Phillips Hid and yes sometimes I do get a flash but I lower the setting on my Shortie down to setting 2-3 then there is no problem .As I live in the country I found the low beam was actually dangerous (2 dull) I upgraded to 4300 HID not any higher as it was pointless .My spotties, Hella 4K, I up graded to HID as well . Yes there is a bit of reflection from the sign posts but when I can see both side of the roadside verge clearly and Roo's before they try to make a dash across the road then I have no problems with them. I can accept that if you are city bound(live) then I believe there is no justifiable reason for the upgrade . I have done it purely for safety on country roads .I hope I have not offended anyone but until something better comes along I will try and stick with my upgrade. PS I have not done my High beam even though I have the gear to do it as I find with my spotties and low on at the same time on high beam that I have found to upgrade the high beam is not warranted . cheers Foxy

Did the same on my 150 and for the very same reason - living in the country and driving loads of km's in the dark.

I think if you have projector style headlights - that cut light off sharply, and you adjust them down correctly, there is no issue. I never get flashed by cars to say my head lights are blinding them!
When HID kits are put into reflector style lights, that is when the light spreads everywhere and blinds on-coming traffic.

I too have the Hella 4K's with HID kit (55W) they work a treat on the country roads

I used a X-Ray vision kit in mine for the upgrade, only comes in 6000K colour for the H11 bulb - which is disappointing.
If I had my time again I'd go the Phillips Kit 4300K for a little more $$ outlay. In my opinion the 6000K can be annoying when the roads are wet and its dark, a 4300K or 5000K would be best.

My spotties are 5000K 55W HID and they light everything up, regardless of conditions.
